HOUSTON<\/strong> \u2013 More than six years after a Houston-area teenager disappeared after becoming a victim of human trafficking, authorities have identified her remains, bringing long-awaited answers to a case that had remained unsolved.<\/p>\n

Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton announced Monday that advanced DNA testing identified the remains as Kristen Galvan, who was 15 years old when she disappeared from Montgomery County in January 2020.<\/p>\n

The remains were recovered in Missouri City on Jan. 29, 2020, but investigators were unable to identify them for years because of their condition.<\/p>\n

According to the Texas Office of the Attorney General, an autopsy and anthropological examination determined the victim was a girl between 13 and 18 years old and appeared to be the victim of a homicide. Investigators were unable to develop a standard DNA profile, prompting the Missouri City Police Department to request assistance from the attorney general\u2019s Cold Case and Missing Persons Unit in November 2022.<\/p>\n

The unit worked with the University of North Texas to develop a mitochondrial DNA profile, which gave investigators their first leads. Because the case involved a juvenile, the investigation also included the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children. The Doe Network helped researchers connect the unidentified remains to Galvan, though additional testing was needed to confirm the match.<\/p>\n

Over the past year, investigators used forensic investigative genetic genealogy with Bode Technology and Astrea Forensics to positively identify the remains as Galvan.<\/p>\n

\u201cI launched my Cold Case and Missing Persons Unit to secure justice for victims and to provide closure to families whose lives have been forever changed by violent crime,\u201d Paxton said in a statement. \u201cRight now, I ask every Texan to join me in praying for Kristen Galvan\u2019s family during this unimaginably difficult time.\u201d<\/p>\n

Authorities said they cannot release additional details because the homicide investigation remains active.<\/p>\n
