Stellan Skarsgård’s Baron Harkonnen still haunts many nightmares, as do Bill Skarsgård’s Pennywise and his Nosferatu. But Alexander Skarsgård, who recently transformed himself into the title character of Murderbot, has a surprisingly sexy addition to the list: a man woven from rattan to woo Olivia Colman’s character in Wicker.

The first trailer for Wicker is here, following its well-received world premiere at the Sundance Film Festival earlier this year, and it looks sweet, funny, and a bit dirty too.

Wicker looks like it brings creative new context to a relatively familiar story: a lonely outsider finds love, and everyone who’s gotten used to treating her as an object of ridicule can’t handle seeing her happy. Of course, there are some magical elements at play in this particular telling of it.

“An audacious comedic fable about sex, marriage, and the absurdities of social convention, Wicker tells the wholly original love story of an ostracized fisherwoman (Olivia Colman) who commissions a husband to be made by the local basketmaker (Peter Dinklage),” the official synopsis reads. “When her wicker husband (Alexander Skarsgård) proves more spectacular than she ever imagined, his soulful spirit and unique prowess awaken something inside her, setting off a wave of jealousy, fascination, and upheaval that threatens the very fabric of village life.”

The press release reveals that Skarsgård’s wicker-ness was achieved using entirely practical effects, which makes it even more impressive. Wicker was directed by Alex Huston Fischer and Eleanor Wilson (Save Yourselves!) and is based on Ursula Wills’ short story “The Wicker Husband.”

Wicker hits limited theaters October 23 before opening nationwide October 30.

Want more io9 news?
