(WBRC) – New traffic cameras are going up in Jacksonville to help keep you safe and help authorities solve crimes.

The Jacksonville City Council approved $50,000 for nine new traffic cameras.

“They want to make the campus safer or Jacksonville a safer place, they could possibly try adding more cameras,” said JSU student Malachi Horton.

That’s the response when it comes to more traffic cameras coming to the city.

Jacksonville Police Chief Marcus Wood said the new cameras will be installed around town. The cameras will connect to Oxford’s East Metro Area Crime Center to help officers investigate traffic accidents and crimes.

“This was something funded through the city’s budget that we put into our FY26 budget. Our purchases over a certain amount the council has to approve,” said Chief Wood. “If there’s a pedestrian issue, it helps us to be able to track all of those things. We want to use it as a law enforcement tool to ensure that one; we have the evidence, and two; we’re able to see things in real-time.”

According to Chief Wood, the East Metro Area Crime Center in Oxford will be the eyes and ears for his officers on the street. As for students on campus, they say safety is a priority.

“I don’t think you can ever be too safe. I would rather be overprotected in those safe things regarding safety, but I think time will be able to tell,” said JSU student Zion Fitzgerald.

Chief Marcus Wood said they’re working to get all of the parts and pieces within the next four to six weeks before they’re able to install the cameras.

Get news alerts in the Apple App Store and Google Play Store or subscribe to our email newsletter here.

Copyright 2026 WBRC.
