The heat subsided only to welcome thunderstorms that knocked out power for\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.chicagotribune.com\/2025\/07\/24\/thunderstorms-chicago-comed-power-outages-51000-cook-county\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">50,000 ComEd customers.<\/a><\/p>\n<p>But it wasn\u2019t all doom and gloom this week. After years of construction, four North Side Red Line stations <a href=\"https:\/\/www.chicagotribune.com\/2025\/07\/18\/north-side-renovated-red-line-stations-to-reopen-sunday\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">reopened Sunday,<\/a> and in some good news for homeowners, Mayor Brandon Johnson said he <a href=\"https:\/\/www.chicagotribune.com\/2025\/07\/25\/mayor-brandon-johnson-no-property-tax-hike\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">won\u2019t seek a property tax hike<\/a> in his upcoming budget proposal.<\/p>\n<p>Gov. JB Pritzker, along with 17 other Democratic governors, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.chicagotribune.com\/2025\/07\/21\/governor-jb-pritzker-federal-education-funding\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">petitioned the Donald Trump administration<\/a> to release nearly $7 billion in withheld federal education grants. On Friday, the Department of Education <a href=\"https:\/\/www.chicagotribune.com\/2025\/07\/25\/education-department-withheld-grant-money\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">did just that.<\/a> But local education leaders are still struggling with their own funding problems. At Thursday\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.chicagotribune.com\/2025\/07\/24\/chicago-public-schools-budge-deficit-problems\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Chicago Board of Education meeting,<\/a> Chief Budget Officer Michael Sitkowski reiterated that Chicago Public Schools has identified $165 million in spending reductions, including cuts to its administrative staff and vendor contracts, but the district is still searching for a solution to its $734 million budget deficit.<\/p>\n<p>Two of the four defendants in the \u201cComEd Four\u201d case were sentenced this week. Ex-ComEd CEO <a href=\"https:\/\/www.chicagotribune.com\/2025\/07\/21\/anne-pramaggiore-sentenced\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Anne Pramaggiore<\/a> and the utility\u2019s former lobbyist\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.chicagotribune.com\/2025\/07\/24\/michael-mcclain-faces-sentencing-madigan\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Michael McClain<\/a> will spend two years in prison for their part in the elaborate scheme to bribe then-House Speaker Michael Madigan.<\/p>\n<p>New Tribune reporting shows arrests by U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement <a href=\"https:\/\/www.chicagotribune.com\/2025\/07\/21\/ice-arrests-increase-across-chicago-under-trump-many-with-no-convictions-data-shows\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">are up in Chicago<\/a> since Trump took office, and local children recently <a href=\"https:\/\/www.chicagotribune.com\/2025\/07\/20\/trump-deportation-letters-chicago-children\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">received deportation letters<\/a> from the Department of Homeland Security. Meanwhile, on Friday, a federal judge in Chicago blocked the Trump administration\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.chicagotribune.com\/2025\/07\/25\/federal-judge-dismisses-trump-administration-lawsuit-challenging-illinois-chicago-sanctuary-policies\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">challenge over sanctuary policies<\/a> in the state of Illinois.<\/p>\n<p>In global news, the United States <a href=\"https:\/\/www.chicagotribune.com\/2025\/07\/24\/us-gaza-ceasefire-talks\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">cut short ceasefire talks<\/a> between Israel and Hamas on Thursday, while hunger and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.chicagotribune.com\/2025\/07\/24\/gaza-starvation-deaths\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">malnutrition surge in Gaza.<\/a> France also announced this week that the country will <a href=\"https:\/\/www.chicagotribune.com\/2025\/07\/24\/france-palestine-statehood\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">recognize Palestine<\/a> as a state.<\/p>\n<p>Three big names in the world of celebrity and entertainment passed away this week. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.chicagotribune.com\/2025\/07\/21\/malcolm-jamal-warner-dies\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Malcolm-Jamal Warner<\/a>, the 54-year-old actor best known for his role as teenage son Theo Huxtable on \u201cThe Cosby Show,\u201d died in an accidental drowning Sunday in Costa Rica.\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.chicagotribune.com\/2025\/07\/22\/ozzy-osbourne-black-sabbath-dies\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Ozzy Osbourne<\/a>, lead singer of Black Sabbath and godfather of heavy metal, died at the age of 76, just weeks after his farewell show. And professional wrestling legend <a href=\"https:\/\/www.chicagotribune.com\/2025\/07\/24\/hulk-hogan-dead-report\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Hulk Hogan<\/a>\u00a0died\u00a0Thursday after suffering cardiac arrest. He was 71.<\/p>\n<p>Plus, the Chicago Cubs and White Sox play each other in this weekend\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.chicagotribune.com\/2025\/07\/25\/cubs-white-sox-city-series-round-2\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">City Series at Rate Field<\/a>.
