{"id":970654,"date":"2026-07-31T05:55:25","date_gmt":"2026-07-31T05:55:25","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/970654\/"},"modified":"2026-07-31T05:55:25","modified_gmt":"2026-07-31T05:55:25","slug":"jacksonville-city-council-members-begin-work-on-bill-to-save-historic-homes-2","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/970654\/","title":{"rendered":"Jacksonville City Council members begin work on bill to save historic homes"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"c-paragraph\">Jacksonville, Fla. \u2014 A new bill that aims to expedite the restoration of deteriorating historic homes is gaining attention among members of Jacksonville\u2019s City Council.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph\">Many historic homes in historic neighborhoods are falling apart and racking up millions of dollars\u2019 worth of fines and liens, with no hope of being restored.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph\">One list compiled by Council member Jimmy Peluso\u2019s (D-District 7) office found 20 properties in Springfield alone that account for nearly $20 million worth of outstanding fines and liens.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph\">\u201cIt\u2019s why we\u2019re doing this,\u201d said Peluso.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.actionnewsjax.com\/live-breaking\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.actionnewsjax.com\/live-breaking\/\" target=\"_blank\"><b>&gt;&gt;&gt; STREAM ACTION NEWS JAX LIVE &lt;&lt;&lt;<\/b><\/a><\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph\">The city could foreclose on those properties, but without any prospect of finding a new buyer willing to put in the work, it often doesn\u2019t make sense to go through with the process.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph\">But Peluso said he hopes he can change the calculation.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph\">His new bill would create an option in which the city could offload historic homes at steep discounts by putting them out to bid to nonprofits, developers or other interested parties.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph\"><b>[DOWNLOAD: <\/b><a href=\"https:\/\/www.actionnewsjax.com\/mobile-apps\/\" target=\"_blank\" title=\"\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\"><b>Free Action News Jax app for alerts as news breaks<\/b><\/a><b>]<\/b><\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph\">Buyers would have to prove they have the means to restore the homes and have two to three years to follow through, or the property would revert back to the city.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph\">\u201cSo, now you\u2019re fixing a historic property. There is potential that somebody on the for-profit side can make a few bucks.
