{"id":970797,"date":"2026-07-31T07:28:30","date_gmt":"2026-07-31T07:28:30","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/970797\/"},"modified":"2026-07-31T07:28:30","modified_gmt":"2026-07-31T07:28:30","slug":"phoenix-hikers-calling-for-help-at-higher-rate-in-2026-fire-data-shows","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/970797\/","title":{"rendered":"Phoenix hikers calling for help at higher rate in 2026, fire data shows"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"text | article-text text-start\"><b>PHOENIX (AZFamily)<\/b> \u2014 The Phoenix Fire Department has responded to nearly 20% more mountain rescue calls so far in 2026 compared to the same period in 2025.<\/p>\n<p class=\"text | article-text\">Phoenix Fire Captain Mike Johnson said the summer months typically bring a spike in calls tied to heat, but rescues occur throughout the year.<\/p>\n<p class=\"text | article-text\">\u201cAs far as the increase, that\u2019s a hard thing to decipher,\u201d Johnson said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"text | article-text\">So far in 2026, there have been 129 mountain rescue calls, according to data shared by the Phoenix Fire Department.<\/p>\n<p class=\"text | article-text\">At the end of July 2025, the department had responded to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.azfamily.com\/2025\/08\/02\/mountain-rescues-remain-high-phoenix-despite-milder-start-summer\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.azfamily.com\/2025\/08\/02\/mountain-rescues-remain-high-phoenix-despite-milder-start-summer\/\">108 mountain rescue calls, and in 2024, that number was 116<\/a> at this point.<\/p>\n<p class=\"text | article-text\">When the National Weather Service issues and Extreme Heat Warning, the City of Phoenix <a href=\"https:\/\/www.phoenix.gov\/administration\/departments\/parks\/activities-facilities\/trails\/heat-safety.html\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.phoenix.gov\/administration\/departments\/parks\/activities-facilities\/trails\/heat-safety.html\">closes down some of its most popular trails<\/a> for much of that day.<\/p>\n<p class=\"text | article-text\">Despite those closures, the Phoenix Fire Department has continued to respond to mountain rescues.<\/p>\n<p class=\"text | article-text\">When technical rescue teams respond to a mountain rescue call, the Phoenix Fire Department sends a lot of resources because they don\u2019t always know what they might need in a given situation.<\/p>\n<p class=\"text | article-text\">\u201cWhen you add that on to now taking a resource-rich call like a mountain rescue, you might have to wait a little bit longer if you\u2019re close in that area and you have a different kind of emergency,\u201d Johnson said. \u201cBut we are ready for anything that can come our way.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"text | article-text\">Those resources include manpower, fuel and equipment, like helicopters \u2014 all that can come at a financial cost.<\/p>\n<p class=\"text | article-text\">One of those 129 rescues took place <a href=\"https:\/\/www.azfamily.com\/2026\/07\/29\/crews-rescue-hiker-stuck-top-mountain-paradise-valley\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.azfamily.com\/2026\/07\/29\/crews-rescue-hiker-stuck-top-mountain-paradise-valley\/\">Wednesday morning on Mummy Mountain<\/a>. A hiker, identified as Oscar-winning animator Glen Keane, described the moment he realized he needed help.<\/p>\n<p class=\"text | article-text\">\u201cI got up there and it was like, what the heck did I do, bringing my family,\u201d Keane said. \u201cI shouldn\u2019t have done this.
