(File photo by Chris Stone)<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.imdb.com\/name\/nm0000184\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">George Lucas<\/a> \u2013 the man who arguably launched an iconic era in pop culture nearly 50 years ago \u2013 is set to make his debut Comic- Con appearance Sunday to offer a preview of his long-awaited Museum of Narrative Art in Los Angeles.<\/p>\n<p>The 81-year-old icon will be joined in Hall H at 11 a.m. by fellow filmmaker <a href=\"https:\/\/www.imdb.com\/name\/nm0868219\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Guillermo Del Toro<\/a> and art director Doug Chiang for a panel discussion moderated by <a href=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/queenlatifah\/?hl=en\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Queen Latifah<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Del Toro and Chiang, both Academy Award winners, will join Lucas to \u201cexplore the power of illustrated storytelling and offer a sneak peek of the Lucas Museum of Narrative Art,\u201d\u00a0\u00a0organizers said.<\/p>\n<p>Co-founded with his wife, businesswoman <a href=\"https:\/\/www.arielinvestments.com\/person\/mellody-hobson\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Mellody Hobson<\/a>, the museum broke ground in March 2018, adjacent to the Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum, and is scheduled to open in 2026. It\u2019s meant to \u201cbring together mass-produced images with academically rooted art forms to unpack visual storytelling in its richness and complexity.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The museum will feature works by artists including Norman Rockwell, Kadir Nelson, Jessie Willcox Smith, N. C. Wyeth, Beatrix Potter, Judy Baca, Frida Kahlo and Maxfield Parrish; comic art legends such as Winsor McCay, Jack Kirby, Frank Frazetta, Alison Bechdel, Chris Ware and R. Crumb; and photographers Gordon Parks, Henri Cartier-Bresson, and Dorothea Lange.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe are beyond thrilled to welcome George Lucas to Comic-Con for the very first time,\u201d said event spokesman David Glanzer. <\/p>\n<p>\u201cNearly five decades ago, `Star Wars\u2019 made one of its earliest public appearances at our convention, along with a booth featuring Howard Chaykin\u2019s now legendary Star Wars poster as a promotional item.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNow, to have Mr. Lucas return \u2013 this time [in person] to debut the Lucas Museum of Narrative Art \u2013 is a true full-circle moment. His lifelong dedication to visual storytelling and world-building resonates deeply with us and our community, and the museum\u2019s mission to celebrate narrative art in all its forms perfectly reflects what Comic-Con has championed from the very beginning.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Speaking of \u201cStar Wars,\u201d fans of \u201cthe Force\u201d will finally be able to get their hands on the latest cache of collectibles at Sunday\u2019s \u201cECHOES from the GALAXY\u201d live and onlline auction at Balboa Park\u2019s Comic-Con Museum.<\/p>\n<p>The Julien\u2019s Auctions-Turner Classic Movies offerings, assembled by crew of super collectors, come at the end of a two week exhibition that has been on display at the museum since July 14.<\/p>\n<p>Some of the highlights include:<\/p>\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>\u201cA New Hope\u201d screen-used Stormtrooper helmet exhibited at the Ronald Reagan Presidential Library\u2019s 2024 exhibition \u201cDefending America and the Galaxy: Star Wars and SDI,\u201d and \u201cbelieved to be featured in scenes on Tatooine as a \u201cSandtrooper\u201d helmet, contact says;<\/li>\n<li>Original production-used Death Star surface pieces including a hand- painted two-sided cardboard \u201ctower\u201d;<\/li>\n<li>\u201cStar Wars: The Phantom Menace\u201d lightsaber props from Ewan McGregor, Liam Neeson and Ray Park (\u201cObi-Wan Kenobi,\u201d \u201cQui-Gon Jinn,\u201d and \u201cDarth Maul,\u201d respectively); and<\/li>\n<li>Mark Hamill\u2019s (\u201cLuke Skywalker\u201d) \u201cReturn of the Jedi\u201d production-made lightsaber.<\/li>\n<li>An original prop hand worn by Anthony Daniels as C-3PO in Star Wars: The Empire Strikes Back ($30,000 * $35,000).<\/li>\n<li>Six prototype heads for an unproduced Yoda toy by Kenner in 1981 for Star Wars: The Empire Strikes Back ($35,000 * $40,000).<\/li>\n<li>An original Signature Edition studio scale Master Replicas Millennium Falcon model, released and featuring a hand-signed and numbered plaque from Harrison Ford<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>A portion of proceeds will help support the Comic-Con Museum\u2019s ongoing mission.<\/p>\n<p>Other highlights inside the convention center will include an interview with George Takei of \u201cStar Trek\u201d fame, the San Diego International Children\u2019s Film Festival and \u201cDefying Gravity:\u201d Exploring the STEM and Ethics of Magic in \u201cWicked.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>With the use of artificial intelligence on the rise, where do artists, voice actors and creators stand? That\u2019s the focus of the \u201cCreators in the Age of AI\u201d panel at 4 p.m. in the Omni Grand Ballroom, run by the <a href=\"https:\/\/navavoices.org\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">National Association of Voice Actors<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe\u2019re at a critical stage in the advancement of AI where we, as voice actors, need to engage, understand the implications, and proactively seek frameworks that ensure the fair treatment of creators,\u201d said Tim Friedlander, NAVA president and co-founder, who will participate on the panel. <\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis is about coming together as an industry to listen, collaborate, and move forward in a way that helps everyone succeed.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The San Diego Convention Center\u2019s largest venue will cap its evening with filmmaker Kevin Smith, who will celebrate the 30th anniversary of \u201cMallrats\u201d and the 25th anniversary of \u201cDogma.\u201d Not-so-Silent Bob will speak about new comics he is releasing and the film he is working on.<\/p>\n<p>On Saturday, fans soaked in a full day of panel action with major announcements about \u201cCoyote vs. Acme,\u201d\u00a0\u00a0\u201cFamily Guy,\u201d \u201cProject Hail Mary\u201d and \u201cStar Trek: Star Fleet Academy,\u201d among other properties.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cCoyote vs. Acme\u201d landed a global release date of Aug. 26, 2026, as announced by its star Will Forte during a Saturday panel, which also included footage of the upcoming Warner Bros. film, a live-action animated \u201clegal comedy\u201d based on the classic Road Runner cartoons.<\/p>\n<p>Creators of the popular Fox animated series \u201cBob\u2019s Burgers\u201d said during a panel that to celebrate its 300th episode, \u201cthe show is celebrating with several special episodes\u201d and will \u201cflashback to the very beginning of the Belchers\u2019 restaurant.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Also Saturday, fans saw a trailer for \u201cStar Trek: Star Fleet Academy,\u201d which is slated for early next year on Paramount+. The new show features a largely Gen Z cast playing a class of cadets in San Francisco training for their debut space adventure. Holly Hunter and Paul Giamatti will headline the cast, but the focus will be on younger characters. The show will also feature actors Sandro Rosta, Kerrice Brooks, Bella Shepard, George Hawkins, Karim Dian\u00e9 and Zoe Steiner.<\/p>\n<p>In related news, a screening of the fourth episode of \u201cStar Trek: Strange New Worlds\u201d was shown Saturday to 6,500 attendees in Hall H.<\/p>\n<p>The episode, titled \u201cA Spaced Adventure Hour,\u201d was a period murder mystery and will air on Paramount+ next week.<\/p>\n<p>Meanwhile, producers announced two new \u201cFamily Guy\u201d holiday specials to stream exclusively on Hulu before the show begins its 24th season on Fox in 2026. The Halloween special titled \u201cA Little Fright Music\u201d will premiere Oct. 6, while no date or further details were announced for the second special.<\/p>\n<p>Saturday\u2019s early action also included a Season 5 preview of \u201cAbbott Elementary\u201d with stars Quinta Brunson and Tyler James Williams, and a sneak preview of Season 37 of \u201cThe Simpsons.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe Simpsons\u201d producers announced upcoming guests for the new season will include Albert Brooks, Kieran Culkin, Cole Escola and Glenn Howerton.<\/p>\n<p>The iconic show\u2019s Halloween special will feature Viola Davis, Idris Elba and Michael Keaton.<\/p>\n<p>Other major events Saturday included a \u201cPeacemaker\u201d panel in Hall H, featuring DC Comic\u2019s James Gunn as well as stars of the series John Cena, Jennifer Holland, Freddie Stroma, Steve Agee, Frank Grillo, Sol Rodriguez and Tim Meadows.<\/p>\n<p>The \u201cProject Hail Mary\u201d team \u2013 including Ryan Gosling and author Andy Weir \u2013\u00a0hosted a panel to discuss the anticipated science fiction film and the relationships therein. The event featured various clips \u2013 a few that generated laughs from audience members \u2013\u00a0from the movie, which will be released next March.<\/p>\n<p>The plot revolves around a middle school teacher, played by Gosling, who is sent into outer space to save humanity. Actresses Sandra H\u00fcller and Milana Vayntrub also star in the film.<\/p>\n<p>Since opening Thursday, Comic-Con 2025 has attracted tens of thousands of attendees, which is expected to generate a regional economic boon of more than $160 million. This includes both direct and indirect spending by visitors. Attendees alone typically spend $96.8 million directly, according to the mayor\u2019s office.<\/p>\n<p>Event organizers have agreed to stay in San Diego \u2013 where Comic-Con has been held nearly every year since 1970 \u2013 through 2027. In 2022, Comic-Con welcomed more than 135,000 attendees and generated $3 million in hotel and sales tax revenue for the city, according to city documents.<\/p>\n<p>The convention shuttered for two years during the coronavirus pandemic and Comic-Con International received more than $2.5 million in Payment Protection Plan loans, all of which have been forgiven.<\/p>\n<p>Comic-Con is the largest comic book and popular-arts convention in the world, with more than 460,000 square feet of exhibit floor space and more than 1,000 exhibitors each year.
