The pollutant of concern is \u201cfine particulate matter\u201d (PM) due to the smoke conditions, the DEC said. The advisory is effective through 11:59 p.m.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/NotifyNYC\/status\/1949178895820829078\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">NYC Emergency Management<\/a> (NYCEM) predicts the air quality index (AQI) to reach 101 to 150 in the city.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-large wp-image-137785115\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/07\/extreme-heat-nyc-reuters-2025.jpg\" alt=\"People walking with umbrellas and other belongings on extremely hot day in NYC amid heat warning and air quality alert\" width=\"1200\" height=\"800\" title=\"Air quality alert in effect for NYC on due to Canadian wildfires 2\"  \/>NYC Emergency Management (NYCEM) predicts the air quality index (AQI) to reach 101 to 150 in the city.\u00a0REUTERS\/Eduardo Munoz<\/p>\n<p>Exposure to PM can cause short-term health effects, such as irritation to the eyes, nose, and throat, coughing, sneezing, runny nose, and shortness of breath, the DEC explained.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cExposure to elevated levels of fine particulate matter can also worsen medical conditions such as asthma and heart disease,\u201d the <a href=\"https:\/\/dec.ny.gov\/news\/press-releases\/2025\/7\/air-quality-health-advisory-issued-for-long-island-new-york-city-metro-lower-hudson-valley-upper-hudson-valley-and-adirondacks-regions\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">DEC website states<\/a>.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>City and state agencies advise New Yorkers to limit prolonged or heavy exertion outdoors during the alert.\u00a0\n<\/p>\n<p>Meanwhile, the NYCEM has issued a heat advisory for the city from 11 a.m. on Monday, July 28, to 8 p.m. on July 29.
