{"id":972583,"date":"2026-08-01T02:32:14","date_gmt":"2026-08-01T02:32:14","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/972583\/"},"modified":"2026-08-01T02:32:14","modified_gmt":"2026-08-01T02:32:14","slug":"jacksonville-to-raise-police-protection-surcharge-17-over-two-years","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/972583\/","title":{"rendered":"Jacksonville to raise police protection surcharge $17 over two years"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>JACKSONVILLE, Ore. \u2013\u00a0In a unanimous vote, Jacksonville City Council passed an ordinance that will raise the town\u2019s monthly police protection surcharge by $17 over two years- an increase of just over 48%.<\/p>\n<p>On August 21, the fee will go from $35 to $47 per month for Jacksonville residences. In July 2027, the fee will increase to $52 per month. The police protection surcharge was first established in 2018 at $20 per month to provide funding for police services.<\/p>\n<p>At the first reading of the ordinance at a council meeting on July 7, Councilor Andrea Thompson said she\u2019d received emails from Jacksonville residents asking about the reasons behind the steep increase. \u201cIt may behoove a member of our staff or a member of our council to write something for our water bill newsletter or for the Jacksonville Review, really explaining the very serious thinking behind this,\u201d said Thompson. <\/p>\n<p>The surcharge will last through the 2028 fiscal year.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-size: 0.9rem;font-style: italic;\">\u00a9 2026 KOBI-TV NBC5.
