\n\tSix months after the disappearance<\/a> of\u00a0Today\u00a0show anchor\u00a0Savannah Guthrie<\/a>\u2018s mother,\u00a0Nancy Guthrie<\/a>, the Pima County Sheriff\u2019s Department in Arizona has released a pair of ransom notes to the public. In the first, the alleged kidnappers demand millions, while the second note states that the 84-year-old Guthrie has \u201cperished.\u201d Nancy was last seen alive on Jan. 31.<\/p>\n

\n\tThe sheriff\u2019s department did not confirm if the notes were authentic and stated that the messages \u201cpurport to have been written by kidnappers.\u201d Investigators are hoping some will recognize the writer\u2019s \u201cpatterns of word choice, syntax and phraseology\u201d and said they believe \u201cthese distinctive linguistic characteristics may be recognizable to someone who knows or has interacted with the notes\u2019 writer.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\tBoth notes were sent to KOLD-TV 13 News, a local CBS affiliate in Tucson. The first, on Feb. 2, was addressed to Savannah and demanded $4 million in Bitcoin for the release of her mother by Feb. 5. The ransom would increase to $6 million if the deadline passed, the note stated, and would then need to paid by Feb. 9. <\/p>\n

\n\t\u201cIf payment is not received by the last deadline on Monday the 9th at 5 p.m., she will be killed,\u201d the note said. \u201cYour mother is aware of this and her life is in your hands.\u201d In what appears to be the author\u2019s indication of authenticity, two alleged details were mentioned \u2014 that Guthrie\u2019s white smart watch had been left on the floor at the foot of her bed and that the backyard\u2019s white floodlight was destroyed.<\/p>\n

\n\tThe second note, sent on Feb. 6 before the initial deadline passed, was addressed to the Guthrie family. \u201cWe did not fully grasp the seriousness of her physical condition. We never intended to hurt her, that was not our intention,\u201d the note read. \u201cShe perished shortly after she was taken. We believe it was heart related.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\tThe message continued: \u201cShe is buried in nature now. Nothing you could have done could have changed the outcome. We want your family to know this and hope you can all find peace. We are truly sorry.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\tAuthorities previously said that Guthrie required daily medication<\/a> and that missing doses could be life-threatening. In a previous video<\/a> posted as a public plea for the return\u00a0of her mother, Savannah said that Guthrie\u2019s heart is \u201cfragile\u201d and that she needs her medicine to survive.<\/p>\n

\n\tNancy is believed to have been taken from her home against her will, as the\u00a0FBI released photos of a masked assailant\u00a0<\/a>approaching her front door in the middle of the night. In July, a man from Hawthorne, California, pleaded guilty to\u00a0sending a fake ransom note<\/a>\u00a0to Guthrie\u2019s family\u00a0in relation to the 84-year-old woman\u2019s disappearance.<\/p>\n

\n\tInvestigators believe that a friend, family member, coworker, classmate or acquaintance may recognize the writer\u2019s \u201cpatterns of expression\u201d and have information that could help identify the person responsible.<\/p>\n

\n\tOfficials appear to have struggled to make significant progress in the investigation. This month, a man who was detained in connection with Guthrie\u2019s disappearance, filed a notice of claim with plans to sue the Pima County Sheriff\u2019s Department.
