{"id":973100,"date":"2026-08-01T08:11:18","date_gmt":"2026-08-01T08:11:18","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/973100\/"},"modified":"2026-08-01T08:11:18","modified_gmt":"2026-08-01T08:11:18","slug":"san-antonio-8th-graders-return-from-china-after-participating-in-international-stem-program","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/973100\/","title":{"rendered":"San Antonio 8th graders return from China after participating in international STEM program"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"Box-_wrDxHtU__Box-sc-10sa3ie-0 Text-nO2aZ44r__TextBase-sc-s2hv5x-0 jJNfBD fSvavs article-text\"><strong>SAN ANTONIO<\/strong> \u2013 Four eighth graders from Las Palmas Leadership School for Girls are back home after representing San Antonio on the international stage during a STEM program in China.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Box-_wrDxHtU__Box-sc-10sa3ie-0 Text-nO2aZ44r__TextBase-sc-s2hv5x-0 jJNfBD fSvavs article-text\">The students spent nearly two weeks participating in the Destination Imagination Summer Experience, an international program that challenges students to solve real-world problems through science, technology, engineering, the arts and teamwork.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Box-_wrDxHtU__Box-sc-10sa3ie-0 Text-nO2aZ44r__TextBase-sc-s2hv5x-0 jJNfBD fSvavs article-text\">KSAT\u2019s Alexis Scott first met the students in June as they prepared for the trip of a lifetime.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Box-_wrDxHtU__Box-sc-10sa3ie-0 Text-nO2aZ44r__TextBase-sc-s2hv5x-0 jJNfBD fSvavs article-text\">During their time in China, the students joined participants from around the world in workshops and team challenges designed to test their creativity, collaboration and problem-solving skills. <\/p>\n<p class=\"Box-_wrDxHtU__Box-sc-10sa3ie-0 Text-nO2aZ44r__TextBase-sc-s2hv5x-0 jJNfBD fSvavs article-text\">Throughout the program, students were presented with timed scenarios that required them to work together to develop innovative solutions using STEM concepts and critical thinking.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Box-_wrDxHtU__Box-sc-10sa3ie-0 Text-nO2aZ44r__TextBase-sc-s2hv5x-0 jJNfBD fSvavs article-text\">One of the highlights, the students said, was the opportunity to collaborate with their peers from another country.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Box-_wrDxHtU__Box-sc-10sa3ie-0 Text-nO2aZ44r__TextBase-sc-s2hv5x-0 jJNfBD fSvavs article-text\">\u201cWe were able to be partnered up with a Chinese team, where we were able to collaborate our ideas and perform with them at the closing ceremony,\u201d Roxy De Leon said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Box-_wrDxHtU__Box-sc-10sa3ie-0 Text-nO2aZ44r__TextBase-sc-s2hv5x-0 jJNfBD fSvavs article-text\">Beyond the competitions, the students visited cities like Beijing and Shanghai. They also immersed themselves in Chinese culture by visiting historic landmarks and museums. <\/p>\n<p class=\"Box-_wrDxHtU__Box-sc-10sa3ie-0 Text-nO2aZ44r__TextBase-sc-s2hv5x-0 jJNfBD fSvavs article-text\">\u201cMy favorite thing has been going to China\u2019s Natural History Museum,\u201d Nayli Hernandez-Cruz said. \u201cI think we all learned a lot about animal species and things that we\u2019ve never seen before.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"Box-_wrDxHtU__Box-sc-10sa3ie-0 Text-nO2aZ44r__TextBase-sc-s2hv5x-0 jJNfBD fSvavs article-text\">Destination Imagination has been inspiring students around the world for decades through hands-on learning experiences that emphasize teamwork, innovation and creative problem-solving. The Summer Experience brings together students from multiple countries to collaborate across cultures while tackling STEM and fine arts challenges.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Box-_wrDxHtU__Box-sc-10sa3ie-0 Text-nO2aZ44r__TextBase-sc-s2hv5x-0 jJNfBD fSvavs article-text\">While students from across Texas participated in this year\u2019s experience, the Las Palmas Leadership School for Girls team was the only group from San Antonio to qualify for the international program.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Box-_wrDxHtU__Box-sc-10sa3ie-0 Text-nO2aZ44r__TextBase-sc-s2hv5x-0 jJNfBD fSvavs article-text\">School leaders said the opportunity allowed the students to strengthen their STEM skills while gaining a broader perspective of the world through cultural exchange and collaboration.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Box-_wrDxHtU__Box-sc-10sa3ie-0 Text-nO2aZ44r__TextBase-sc-s2hv5x-0 jJNfBD fSvavs article-text\">For the four young women, the experience was about much more than competition.
