(File photo courtesy San Diego County Sheriff\u2019s Office)<\/p>\n<p>The San Diego County Sheriff\u2019s Office worked with law enforcement partners this weekend to take 226 weapons off local streets via a gun safety event at <a href=\"https:\/\/www.encinitasca.gov\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Encinitas City Hall.<\/a><\/p>\n<p>Those who turned in handguns, rifles and shotguns Saturday received a $100 gift card, the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sdsheriff.gov\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Sheriff\u2019s Office<\/a> said. Anyone who turned in an assault weapon got a $200 gift card.<\/p>\n<p>Free gun cable locks were also given out to anyone who wanted one, officials said, adding that all the collected weapons will be processed.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAny firearms found to have been involved in a crime will be referred to the appropriate law enforcement agency,\u201d the department added. \u201cIf any guns are found to be stolen, the original owners will be contacted.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The Sheriff\u2019s Office added that the remaining weapons \u201cwill be destroyed in accordance with the law.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Sheriff\u2019s officials including those at the North Coastal station credited the San Diego County District Attorney\u2019s Office, along with the Carlsbad and Oceanside police departments, for making the event a success.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMost importantly, thanks to the public for helping us keep our communities safe by getting unwanted firearms off our streets,\u201d they added.<\/p>\n<p>Officials added that people may always turn in unwanted weapons at any sheriff\u2019s station, substation or any law enforcement agency.<\/p>\n<p>Residents with questions about turning in weapons may call the non-emergency line at (858) 868-3200.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"Deputies at the safety event in Pala.
