Gen. David J. Wilson has now assumed command of Joint Base San Antonio and the 502nd Air Base Wing.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The biennial change of command ceremony welcomed in Gen. Wilson from his previous post in Washington D.C. and brought an end to Brig. Gen. Randy P. Oakland\u2019s two years as JBSA commander, at the same time he retired from 30 years of Air Force service.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cWe will cultivate a culture of respect and professionalism by being empathetic, connected, and present. How are we going to do all this? Teamwork,\u201d Wilson said. \u201cWe will face challenging opportunities each and every day. Many of them will be unpredictable.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" data-recalc-dims=\"1\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1000\" height=\"665\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/JBSA_CommandChange_LacklandRandolph_JointAirForceBase_EventCourtesy_01.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-5448730\"  \/>Brig. The joint base as a whole is home to more than 80,000 full-time personnel across Fort Sam Houston, Lackland, Randolph and Camp Bullis.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cDuring the last two years, JBSA was in need of steady, devoted leadership during a dynamic time. I cannot imagine any other officer who would have perfectly met that challenge and led this team to such great success,\u201d Wilson said of the outgoing commander.<\/p>\n<p>Losing Army North and South<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Last October, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.tpr.org\/government-politics\/2025-10-16\/army-north-and-army-south-will-relocate-from-san-antonio-to-ft-bragg-in-north-carolina\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">officials announced<\/a> that the U.S. Army would move its headquarters of Army North and Army South away from Ft. Sam Houston to Fort Bragg. The creation of the new merged North Carolina-based command, known as Western Hemisphere Command, was part of the Pentagon\u2019s effort to streamline military operations.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><a href=\"https:\/\/media.defense.gov\/2025\/May\/01\/2003702281\/-1\/-1\/1\/ARMY-TRANSFORMATION-AND-ACQUISITION-REFORM.PDF\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">\u201cDownsize, consolidate or close redundant headquarters,\u201d<\/a> was Defense Department Secretary Pete Hegseth\u2019s instructions in combining Forces Command with Army North and South.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.arnorth.army.mil\/About\/Mission\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">U.S. Army North<\/a> was officially shuttered in mid-July, after <a href=\"https:\/\/www.expressnews.com\/news\/article\/u-s-army-south-inactivated-hegseth-merger-22247398.php\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">U.S. Army South\u2019s<\/a> closure in May. Both had called San Antonio home for several decades. The former was tasked with protecting the homeland, while the latter was involved with security operations in Central and South America.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In light of the loss of several hundred jobs associated with the combination and relocation of Army North and South, city leaders are attempting to lure the <a href=\"https:\/\/sanantonioreport.org\/bexar-county-moves-to-spend-10m-on-south-beach-pavilion-project-for-defense-health-agency\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">Defense Health Agency<\/a> (DHA) to San Antonio. Officials hope that <a href=\"https:\/\/sanantonioreport.org\/fort-sam-houston-loses-western-command-preps-for-defense-health-agency\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">relocating the DHA headquarters<\/a> from Falls Church, Va. could make up for failing to bring Western Hemisphere Command to the city.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Last summer, JBSA also assumed control of a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.af.mil\/News\/Article-Display\/Article\/4399639\/national-defense-areas-expanded-established-along-texas-border\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">National Defense Area<\/a> along the U.S.-Mexico border.
