{"id":974004,"date":"2026-08-01T18:14:16","date_gmt":"2026-08-01T18:14:16","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/974004\/"},"modified":"2026-08-01T18:14:16","modified_gmt":"2026-08-01T18:14:16","slug":"shot-nyc-cop-looking-forward-to-getting-back-to-elite-unit","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/974004\/","title":{"rendered":"Shot NYC cop looking forward to getting back to elite unit"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>A veteran detective who was shot by a mentally deranged man during a standoff in Brooklyn in June said he called his wife while he was still bleeding to put her mind at ease and was hoping to be back at the NYPD\u2019s elite Emergency Services Unit soon.<\/p>\n<p>Detective Matthew Gale, who was promoted to second-grade detective during a ceremony at One Police Plaza in Manhattan Friday, was shot on June 19 while trying to stop a barricaded gunman from hurting his elderly neighbors, according to police.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI was just thinking about getting the job done as safely as possible,\u201d Gale said in an interview with his union, his first public words since the incident.\u00a0\u201cI don\u2019t think I did anything that any of the other guys in the Emergency Services Unit wouldn\u2019t have done themselves.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>NYPD Officer Matthew Gale was promoted to second-grade detective at a ceremony on Friday and spoke about being shot for the first time since the June incident. Ribeiro for NY Post<\/p>\n<p>The nearly 20-year veteran was shot by 48-year-old Lamin Simmons \u2013 before four officers returned fire, killing the gunman, cops said.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/2026\/06\/19\/us-news\/nypd-officer-shot-in-brooklyn-during-confrontation-with-suspect\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">The standoff started when cops responded<\/a> to calls of shots fired inside a Bedford-Stuyvesant brownstone on Kosciusko Street. <\/p>\n<p>Officers heard more gunfire coming from inside the home, and when they entered, they found Simmons holding a gun, police said.<\/p>\n<p>The NYPD\u2019s ESU, Hostage Negotiation Team and other specialized units then responded.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Gale was shot in the shin after going into the building and confronting Simmons. <\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019m just working really hard to get back to where I was,\u201d Gale said Friday, in a Detectives Endowment Association video. <\/p>\n<p>\u201cThey put a rod and a bunch of screws in my leg,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>Gale said he called his wife right after he was shot to put her mind at ease. Ribeiro for NY Post<\/p>\n<p>At first he couldn\u2019t walk, but is now getting around on crutches and going through physical therapy.<\/p>\n<p>His wife Kelly and their two children attended the ceremony.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI was able to call her from the street that day,\u201d he said. \u201cShe was like, \u2018If you hadn\u2019t done that I probably would have been terrified but you did and I knew you were going to be OK.\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Gale was shot during a two-hour standoff with an armed man who was threatening his elderly neighbors. Mango for NY Post<\/p>\n<p>During the two-hour standoff, Simmons hurled a microwave, a lamp and kitchenware from a rear window, narrowly missing cops in the backyard, authorities said.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>When ESU entered the home, they found Simmons armed with a gun on the top of the stairs, where the elderly couple he had been feuding with were trapped in their apartment, authorities said.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Cops ordered him to drop the gun, but Simmons fired on them, hitting Gale.\u00a0Four officers returned fire and Simmons was shot dead, police said.<\/p>\n<p>The shot officer said he was looking forward to getting back to his elite unit. Mango for NY Post<\/p>\n<p>Gale, who thanked the DEA and his unit for the support they provided, said he was excited about the promotion because \u201cnot many people on the job will ever see second grade.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>First grade is the highest level of detective.<\/p>\n<p>Gale walked across the stage on crutches to accept his promotion from Police Commissioner Jessica Tisch.<\/p>\n<p>The barricaded man who shot Gale thew household items out a window at responding cops.
