Getty Images<\/p>\n<p>The previous deadline was Aug. 21 for homes and Aug. 24 for co-ops and condos.<\/p>\n<p>The socialist mayor \u2014 who lobbied for the new tax \u2014 had claimed for months it would only hit wealthy out-of-towners. <\/p>\n<p>But many full-time residents cried foul after Department of Finance mailed them a notice saying that they \u201cmay\u201d be on the hook\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/2026\/07\/28\/us-news\/longtime-new-yorkers-fume-after-being-hit-with-massive-pied-a-terre-tax-bills-is-this-a-witch-hunt\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">for a five-figure tax bill<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>The city in the last week has sent out 17,000 letters alerting property owners they could be subject to the tax \u2014 more than the 10,000-13,000 non-primary residences that government officials earlier estimated would be slapped with the surcharge.<\/p>\n<p><img style=\"aspect-ratio:1.50146628;display:block\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" data-modal-image=\"40154320\" width=\"886\" height=\"590\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/nyc-skyline-overview-seen-hernshead-125701482.jpg\" alt=\"Overview of the NYC skyline as seen from Central Park, with a body of water in the foreground and tall buildings in the background.\" class=\"wp-image-40154320\"  \/>Mamdani \u2014 who lobbied for the new tax \u2014 had claimed for months it would only hit wealthy out-of-towners.  Robert Miller for NY Post<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis is really the least this administration can do to begin to fix this train wreck,\u201d said Council Minority Leader David Carr (R-Staten Island).<\/p>\n<p>\u201cEvery homeowner should have ample time to appeal this tax assessment, after they have been properly notified. Giving them less than a month in the middle of the summer is a bad joke.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The new tax, approved by the Democratic-controlled state Legislature and Gov.
