Fresh off a stellar debut season in Dallas<\/a> and a three-year contract extension, JaVonte Williams returns as the Cowboys’ starting running back looking to anchor an offense that profiles as one of the best in the league.<\/p>\n

Williams rushed for 1,201 yards last season, and the 26-year-old says his success in Dallas is largely due to the confidence he’s built up in offensive coordinator Klayton Adams’ system.<\/p>\n

Williams visited with the K&C Masterpiece on 105.3 The Fan (KRLD-FM)<\/a> on Friday in Oxnard where he discussed\u00a0that sense of confidence leading into the upcoming season and how he’s stepped into a leadership role in the Cowboys’ offense.<\/p>\n

Question: “I’m not sure how much of [Broncos coach] Sean\u00a0Payton’s offense was different than what you did last year or even what you did earlier in your career, but it looked like you were very comfortable in what this offense was last year. Was there something similar that you kind of understood better or did Klayton Adams make it a lot easier? Or was it that offensive front that made it easier for you?”<\/strong><\/p>\n

JaVonte Williams:<\/strong> “I mean, a combination of all of that. And just confidence. No knock on the team I played for before but just being embraced, being here and seeing the camaraderie in the locker room. I mean, the coaches can’t even walk in the locker room [in Dallas]. Schotty told them, you can’t walk in the locker room, that’s [the players’] space. So just us being here, doing what we wanna do, it feels like a safe space, so when you go out to practice it’s still a brotherhood, I mean we’re just out there having fun.<\/p>\n

“I told [Cowboys backup QB and fellow North Carolina Tar Heel] Sam Howell when he signed, I was like, ‘Bro it feels just like Chapel Hill, it feels like college.’ And then he came up to me yesterday, he was like, ‘I like this, this really does feel like college.’ So I mean it’s just that brotherhood we got, that makes things a whole lot easier, just knowing your brother got your back.”<\/p>\n

Q: “With that in mind, how cool is it to be part of the leadership council [on the team], and essentially be elected to the leadership council?”<\/strong><\/p>\n

Williams:<\/strong> “Yeah it’s a huge honor, this just being my second year here. Coach Schotty already embraced me, Dak, all the leaders on the team, they pretty much look up to me, even though I don’t say too much. I mean I just try to lead by example. I can’t go out there and tell them to do something if I’m not gonna do it.
