The Rams<\/a> knew the resume. Saw the highlights. Gathered all the intel required.<\/p>\n

But they were not aware of Myles Garrett<\/a>\u2019s aura.<\/p>\n

How could they?<\/p>\n

It\u2019s not tangible, nor easily defined.<\/p>\n

It\u2019s just there.<\/p>\n

\u201cYou just feel him,\u201d coach Sean McVay<\/a> said Friday.<\/p>\n

McVay felt and said that before. About Aaron Donald<\/a>. About Jalen Ramsey<\/a>.<\/p>\n

But listening to Rams players talk about Garrett, this feels different.<\/p>\n

Mystical.<\/p>\n

\u201cYou can just feel his aura,\u201d cornerback Trent McDuffie<\/a> said.<\/p>\n

Safety Quentin Lake<\/a> explained it the same way.<\/p>\n

\u201cJust his presence,\u201d Lake said, \u201chis aura.\u201d<\/p>\n

The Myles Garrett effect is not confined to the defense.<\/p>\n

\u201cEverybody on the field can kind of feel this aura sitting on whatever side of the field he\u2019s on,\u201d offensive guard Kevin Dotson<\/a> said. \u201cYou just feel this monster energy.\u201d<\/p>\n

Garrett, a 10th year pro and two-time NFL defensive player of the year, laughed when asked if he was conscious of his aura.<\/p>\n

\u201cI guess,\u201d he said. \u201cIt\u2019s great to hear that they have respect for me.\u201d<\/p>\n

Garrett, 30, is one of the biggest stars on a star-studded Rams team that is favored to win the Super Bowl, regardless of whether Donald comes out of retirement<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Garrett, the No. 1 pick in the 2017 draft out of Texas A&M, amassed 125\u00bd sacks in nine seasons with the Cleveland Browns. He was defensive player of the year in 2023 and also last season, when he recorded a league-record 23 sacks.<\/p>\n

In June, the Rams sent edge rusher Jared Verse, a 2027 first-round pick and future second- and third-round picks to the Browns for Garrett. He was regarded as the final piece for a franchise intent on winning a second Super Bowl title under McVay.<\/p>\n

Garrett is acclimating to Southern California and a team that advanced to the NFC championship game last season before losing to the eventual Super Bowl champion Seattle Seahawks<\/a>.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt\u2019s starting to feel like home rather quickly,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n

It did not take long for Garrett to ingratiate himself. His skill, work ethic and knowledge are imparted in the meeting room and on the field, edge rusher Byron Young said.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt\u2019s amazing,\u201d Young said. \u201cIt\u2019s art.\u201d<\/p>\n

Last season, Young recorded a career-best 12 sacks and was voted to the Pro Bowl.<\/p>\n

With Garrett now lining up alongside him, the fourth-year pro is soaking in knowledge and learning from his example. Though Garrett, at 6 feet, 4 inches and 272 pounds, makes plays that can\u2019t be replicated by others.<\/p>\n

Garrett\u2019s quickness off the ball is \u201cinsane,\u201d Young said, noting that Garrett eats up \u201cthree or four yards,\u201d with his first step.<\/p>\n

\u201cThat right there alone is amazing,\u201d Young said.<\/p>\n

Garrett\u2019s influence could be magnified if Donald, a three-time defensive player of the year, ends a two-year retirement to pursue another Super Bowl ring.<\/p>\n

Garrett said he would not try to sway Donald\u2019s decision. But he acknowledged that it would be exciting to be a \u201cpartner in crime\u201d with the eight-time All-Pro.<\/p>\n

\u201cThere\u2019s a lot we can learn from each other,\u201d Garrett said, \u201cand I\u2019d love to pick his brain on the things he does to attack his matchups and I think the same could be said vice versa.\u201d<\/p>\n

During training camp, Garrett and teammates are focused on blending their talents at all three levels of the defense.<\/p>\n

Garrett is a \u201cfreak athlete for sure,\u201d lineman Kobie Turner said.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe definitely understand the opportunities that should get opened up,\u201d said Turner, who had seven sacks last season, \u201cand if those opportunities don\u2019t open up and they leave him soloed up, he\u2019s going to take advantage.\u201d<\/p>\n

There is \u201cno question\u201d Garrett will dominate, Lake said.<\/p>\n

\u201cSo now,\u201d he said, \u201cit\u2019s just making sure, \u2018Hey, can we do our job so this guy can go cut it loose over there too?\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n

Garrett has embraced the Rams\u2019 culture, built during McVay\u2019s nine seasons during which the Rams made seven playoff appearances and played in two Super Bowls, winning one.<\/p>\n

He is eager to share his knowledge and experience but also learn from younger teammates. The Rams\u2019 defensive front features Young, Turner, and linemen Braden Fiske and Poona Ford, among others.<\/p>\n

\u201cThis group was doing great without me,\u201d Garrett said. \u201cI want to just try to help elevate other guys and the playmakers that we have here.\u201d<\/p>\n

There is still \u201ca lot of rust to knock off,\u201d during camp and the lead-up to the season, he said.<\/p>\n

The Rams\u2019 opener against the San Francisco 49ers in Melbourne, Australia<\/a>, will be their first opportunity to measure the benefit of Garrett\u2019s presence. It\u2019s the start of a season the Rams aim to end with a Super Bowl victory at SoFi Stadium<\/a>.<\/p>\n
