SpaceX founder Elon Musk <a href=\"https:\/\/byrondonalds.com\/elon-musk-endorses-byron-donalds-for-florida-governor\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">endorsed<\/a> Donalds in his gubernatorial bid.<\/p>\n<p data-v-94395e58=\"\">According to a July 31 press release, Donalds said the initiative will also:\u00a0<\/p>\n<ul original-article-post=\"\" origination_station=\"WOFL\" data-v-03e8ff79=\"\" data-v-94395e58=\"\">\n<li class=\"article-ct\" data-v-03e8ff79=\"\">Streamline permitting for strategic space industry projects<\/li>\n<li class=\"article-ct\" data-v-03e8ff79=\"\">Establish a statewide workforce pipeline through industry-led training programs<\/li>\n<li class=\"article-ct\" data-v-03e8ff79=\"\">Convene a Florida Space Race Summit<\/li>\n<li class=\"article-ct\" data-v-03e8ff79=\"\">Strengthen partnerships between state government, Space Florida, industry leaders and research institutions<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p original-article-post=\"\" origination_station=\"WOFL\" data-v-ec26887a=\"\" data-v-94395e58=\"\">The backstory:<\/p>\n<p data-v-94395e58=\"\">In H.R. 2422 <a href=\"https:\/\/donalds.house.gov\/uploadedfiles\/gard_act.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">&#8220;Consolidating Aerospace Programs Efficiently at Canaveral Act, <\/a>Donalds proposed <a href=\"https:\/\/donalds.house.gov\/news\/documentsingle.aspx?DocumentID=1846\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">moving NASA headquarters to Brevard County<\/a> within one year of enactment. The bill was co-led by Representatives Mario D\u00edaz-Balart (R-FL), Jared Moskowitz (D-FL), and Debbie Wasserman-Schultz (D-FL) and is the companion bill to Senator Ashley Moody&#8217;s <a href=\"https:\/\/donalds.house.gov\/uploadedfiles\/cape_canaveral_act.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">CAPE Canaveral Act<\/a>.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p data-v-94395e58=\"\">NASA&#8217;s lease for its current headquarters facility in Washington, D.C., is <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nasa.gov\/centers-and-facilities\/hq\/nasa-seeks-options-for-future-headquarters-building\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">set to expire in August 2028<\/a>, and the space agency is actively exploring relocation options.<\/p>\n<p> Argument to bring NASA headquarters to Florida <\/p>\n<p data-v-94395e58=\"\">The bipartisan plan leans on Florida&#8217;s long history with human space flight.<\/p>\n<p data-v-94395e58=\"\">&#8220;Florida launched the first space race, and Florida will win the next one,&#8221; Donalds said in a released statement.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p data-v-94395e58=\"\">The bill lists <a href=\"https:\/\/donalds.house.gov\/news\/documentsingle.aspx?DocumentID=1846\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">five reasons <\/a>for its argument:\u00a0<\/p>\n<ul original-article-post=\"\" origination_station=\"WOFL\" data-v-03e8ff79=\"\" data-v-94395e58=\"\">\n<li class=\"article-ct\" data-v-03e8ff79=\"\">Proximity to launch sites: With Florida being home to major launch sites for NASA missions \u2013 including the recent <a href=\"https:\/\/www.fox35orlando.com\/tag\/science\/air-space\/artemis-2\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">Artemis II crewed mission<\/a> around the moon \u2013 legislators believe having the headquarters nearby will streamline operations, reduce travel costs and improve coordination.<\/li>\n<li class=\"article-ct\" data-v-03e8ff79=\"\">Geographical advantage: Being close to the Equator, Florida is ideal for rocket launches due to the Earth&#8217;s rotational speed.<\/li>\n<li class=\"article-ct\" data-v-03e8ff79=\"\">Existing infrastructure: Florida already has close partnerships with agencies active in aerospace and space exploration.<\/li>\n<li class=\"article-ct\" data-v-03e8ff79=\"\">Economic boost: By bringing NASA headquarters to Florida, lawmakers anticipate an economic boom \u2013 including more jobs and increased investments in local communities.<\/li>\n<li class=\"article-ct\" data-v-03e8ff79=\"\">Experienced workforce: NASA&#8217;s own workforce would strengthen, lawmakers said, by cutting the need for experienced aerospace experts to relocate to Washington D.C.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p> <strong>Bringing jobs to the Sunshine State<\/strong> <\/p>\n<p data-v-94395e58=\"\">The initiative also focuses on building workforce pipelines for skilled trades \u2013 including welders, electricians, machinists, and construction workers.<\/p>\n<p data-v-94395e58=\"\">Lynda Weatherman, President &amp; CEO of the Economic Development Commission of Florida&#8217;s Space Coast, said local workforce planning is already in motion. After surveying 18 area aerospace companies, Weatherman&#8217;s team identified an immediate need for 7,121 jobs across 12 specific skill sets.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p data-v-94395e58=\"\">The commission has since identified local and state colleges that align degree and certification programs with those industry demands.<\/p>\n<p data-v-94395e58=\"\">&#8220;The need for creating a workforce from within has never been more critical,&#8221; Weatherman said.<\/p>\n<p original-article-post=\"\" origination_station=\"WOFL\" data-v-ec26887a=\"\" data-v-94395e58=\"\">What they&#8217;re saying:<\/p>\n<p data-v-94395e58=\"\">U.S. Senator Ashley Moody spoke on &#8220;Florida&#8217;s Space Race&#8221; during a joint speaking engagement Friday, saying,\u00a0<\/p>\n<p data-v-94395e58=\"\">&#8220;We\u2019ve set some very ambitious goals for our space program nationally,&#8221; Florida\u2019s Senator Moody said. &#8220;\u2026 There is a lot of energy and excitement around Florida\u2019s Space Coast.
