{"id":976623,"date":"2026-08-02T22:55:23","date_gmt":"2026-08-02T22:55:23","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/976623\/"},"modified":"2026-08-02T22:55:23","modified_gmt":"2026-08-02T22:55:23","slug":"provocation-saar-clashes-with-fellow-new-hope-mk-in-probe-of-comptroller-vote","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/976623\/","title":{"rendered":"&#8216;Provocation&#8217;: Sa&#8217;ar clashes with fellow New Hope MK in probe of comptroller vote"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>New Hope MK Sharren Haskel told police on Sunday that her own faction ordered its lawmakers to record themselves casting ballots for Michael Rabello, Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu\u2019s preferred candidate in the vote for state comptroller in June, and to show their votes to the premier.<\/p>\n<p>In her testimony to investigators from the Lahav 433 major crimes unit, Haskel said that the instruction to record the votes came down from New Hope MK Michel Buskila, the party whip, a source familiar with the investigation was cited by Kan as saying.<\/p>\n<p>Police are expected to collect testimony from other New Hope MKs who would have received the same instructions, the report said. (Chaim Goldberg\/Flash90)<\/p>\n<p>The comptroller election was marred by at least six coalition MKs recording their vote, which opposition parties and government watchdog groups have alleged was done on the instructions of senior Likud officials.<\/p>\n<p>The High Court of Justice ruled that those MKs had<a href=\"https:\/\/www.timesofisrael.com\/high-court-rules-state-comptroller-election-violated-ballot-secrecy-must-be-held-again\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\"> violated the legal requirement<\/a> that the vote be held by secret ballot, regardless of whether they were instructed to record their vote.<\/p>\n<p>The court ruled that the Knesset must therefore hold a new election for the state comptroller position.<\/p>\n<p>Justice Minister Yariv Levin called on the Knesset <a href=\"https:\/\/www.timesofisrael.com\/levin-urges-knesset-to-ignore-high-court-order-for-new-state-comptroller-vote\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">not to abide by the ruling<\/a>, and no repeat election has been held. Rabello, however, has refused to take up the position in light of the High Court ruling, leaving it unfilled.<\/p>\n<p>\t<a href=\"https:\/\/static-cdn.toi-media.com\/www\/uploads\/2026\/06\/F260601YS349-1.jpg\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-large wp-image-3835889\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/06\/F260601YS349-1-640x400.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"600\" height=\"375\"\/><\/a><br \/>\n\t\tAttorney Michael Rabello, elected by MKs as state comptroller on June 3, 2026, seen at the Knesset on June 1, 2026. (Yonatan Sindel\/Flash90)<\/p>\n<p>During the course of the High Court case, several Likud MKs filed affidavits to the court declaring that they had not been instructed to vote for Rabello, Netanyahu\u2019s long-time lawyer and adviser.<\/p>\n<p>But two weeks ago, Haskel testified in her own affidavit in the framework of a different legal process in the High Court that members of New Hope had been <a href=\"https:\/\/www.timesofisrael.com\/mk-haskel-testifies-lawmakers-were-told-to-film-vote-for-comptroller-show-netanyahu\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">instructed to video themselves<\/a> voting for Rabello, and that the MKs were also instructed to show the video of their vote to Netanyahu.<\/p>\n<p>In that affidavit, she did not specify where the order had come from.<\/p>\n<p>Following the submission of Haskel\u2019s affidavit, Attorney General Gali Baharav-Miara instructed police to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.timesofisrael.com\/ag-said-to-demand-police-probe-conflicting-claims-in-state-comptroller-vote-scandal\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">probe the conflicting affidavits<\/a> and explore the possibility of launching a criminal investigation for perjury into whomever is found to be lying.<\/p>\n<p>\t<a href=\"https:\/\/static-cdn.toi-media.com\/www\/uploads\/2026\/06\/F260603OBH05.jpg\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-large wp-image-3836914\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/F260603OBH05-640x400.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"600\" height=\"375\"\/><\/a><br \/>\n\t\tLikud Knesset Faction Secretary Aliza Barashi reacts during the state comptroller election in the plenum of the Knesset, in Jerusalem, June 3, 2026. (Oren Ben Hakoon\/Flash90)<\/p>\n<p>Haskel entered the Knesset as part of New Hope, but opposed its March 2025 merger with Likud and has refused to run on the joint list.<\/p>\n<p>Last month, she <a href=\"https:\/\/www.timesofisrael.com\/liveblog_entry\/deputy-fm-sharren-haskel-resigns-from-government-in-protest-of-draft-dodger-law\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">resigned<\/a> from her role of deputy foreign minister and left the government, after the Knesset passed a law banning the arrest and prosecution of Haredi draft dodgers.<\/p>\n<p>In a widely circulated handwritten resignation note, Haskel accused Sa\u2019ar of betrayal, writing: \u201cYou lied to me.
