Today, Mystery Booster Commander Edition was playable for the first time at Gen Con 2026. While this was a fantastic treat for event attendees lucky enough to be invited, it\u2019s not ideal for every MTG player. Technically, this set doesn\u2019t officially launch until MagicCon: Atlanta in November, but tons of spoilers have been revealed early today.<\/p>\n

While many of the images from event attendees aren\u2019t perfect, this new Mystery Booster already looks insanely exciting. From the new mechanically unique cards alone, this product looks like one hell of a slam dunk. We can only hope that when it does launch officially, Wizards doesn\u2019t make it needlessly rare and exclusive.<\/p>\n

MTG Ashaya\u2019s Enduring Bond<\/p>\n

\"Ashaya's<\/p>\n

While we knew Mystery Booster Commander Edition would be weird, Ashaya\u2019s Enduring Bond is on another level. As a legendary sorcery that can be your Commander, this card breaks new ground in the format. While this does sound absolutely insane, it\u2019s actually fairly simple in execution, and the card itself is rather restrained.<\/p>\n

Offering a scaling Discover effect that depends on the amount of mana spent, Ashaya\u2019s Enduring Bond is just okay. While you are guaranteed to find something, you could easily whiff on a low mana-value card. If you construct your deck wisely, however, this Commander could be an insane combo tutor for fast kills.<\/p>\n

MTG Seluma, Light of Aysen<\/p>\n

\"MTG<\/p>\n

As expected from cards that feature the Rulebreaker mechanic, Seluma, Light of Aysen is pretty nuts. Allowing you to play any Angel in MTG, this card is bound to be the new best-in-slot choice for Angel Typal decks. The fact it can also reanimate any Angel too, regardless of mana cost, is an insane upside that\u2019ll make it hugely popular.<\/p>\n

Sadly, this likely means that Seluma, Light of Aysen is going to be outrageously expensive, even once Mystery Booster Command Edition launches. Hopefully, Wizards will have some measures to counteract this, as otherwise the new best Angel might be the most expensive one too.<\/p>\n

MTG Grizzlegom, Hurloon Hero<\/p>\n

\"MTG<\/p>\n

On top of having one of the best names in MTG, Grizzlegom, Hurloon Hero has a pretty nuts ability. Not only can you run any lands you want, regardless of color, but having tons in play makes attacking with Grizzlegom insane. With each attack theoretically providing multiple bodies, card draw, life loss, counters, and life, this Minotaur really does it all.<\/p>\n

Notably, while you can play any lands, you\u2019re otherwise still restricted to a Gruul color identity. While this will limit Grizzlegom, Hurloon Hero somewhat, it\u2019ll still work wonders with Domain and Landfall cards. With plenty of these available in Gruul, this Commander might be one to look out for<\/p>\n

MTG The Unlickiest Planeswalker<\/p>\n

\"MTG<\/p>\n

After being cursed over and over and over and over again, it seems the \u201cCurse Guy\u201d managed to spark. Now, they can turn the tables on everyone who wronged them as an honestly insane Aura Commander. Even if you\u2019re not leaning into the implied curse theme, this card is genuinely very strong.<\/p>\n

Not only can you run any aura you want without color restriction, but it can ramp and refill your hand, too. Add on the 1\/1 Goblins it makes to protect itself, and this Commander does an absolute ton for three mana. While this should make it a fantastic new build around, especially for themed decks, we do fear how expensive it might be.<\/p>\n

MTG Valko Indorian<\/p>\n

\"MTG<\/p>\n

If you\u2019ve ever wanted to run a full Phyrexian Typal deck but don\u2019t like Atraxa<\/a>, then MTG Valko Indorian is for you. Sadly, while this is a flavorful Rulebreaker ability, the upside you get from it is pretty limited. Not only are you limited to black non-Phyrexian spells, but Menace and Lifelink aren\u2019t the most gamebreaking buffs.<\/p>\n

Realistically, while Valko Indorian might not be the best new Commander in Mystery Booster Commander Edition, it\u2019s still plenty fun. If anything, it\u2019s just a delight that the set isn\u2019t totally overtuned, and is giving love to these underrepresented strategies.<\/p>\n

MTG Tsagan, Raider Warlord<\/p>\n

\"MTG<\/p>\n

Originally designed as an Alchemy card, Tsagan, Raider Warlord is now fully playable on paper in Commander. There\u2019s no Acorn Stamp here, too, unlike the past Alchemy legends, so this one is fully fair game. Considering absolutely nothing had to be changed to bring this card to paper, this legality definitely feels like the right choice.<\/p>\n

As a Commander, Tsagan, Raider Warlord is actually pretty powerful, too. So long as you can get Max Speed online at a reasonable time, you can massively buff your board with each swing. Naturally, this encourages an aggressive go-wide deck, and within that shell, Tsagan is a real force to be reckoned with.<\/p>\n

MTG Sahir, Visitor in Darkness<\/p>\n

\"MTG<\/p>\n

Given it features an Eminence ability, Sahir, Visitor in Darkness is automatically terrifying; however, it\u2019s not as bad as you might think. All this Eminence ability does is hurt you, which doesn\u2019t have any upside until Sahir is in play properly. Once there, each one-damage self-ping becomes a source of buffs and card draw, which is interesting, but just okay.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Notably, while Sahir can scale quickly with cards like Blasting Station<\/a>, it only triggers off pings you control. Due to this, Sahir will require an incredibly focused and risky deck that may be held back by its color identity. If you can stack up enough counters quickly, however, this card could be a legitimate threat with Commander damage.\u00a0<\/p>\n

MTG Worzel, the Protector<\/p>\n

\"MTG<\/p>\n

While Worzel, the Protector can technically be your Commander, this Selesnya planeswalker is really a Superfriends staple. In this planeswalker-heavy archetype, the tokens it creates are an absolute godsend, easily supercharging your game plan. Alongside token and counter doublers like Doubling Season<\/a>, these cats will do insane work.<\/p>\n

As if this wasn\u2019t good enough, Worzel, the Protector has a mild tutor effect to find you even more planeswalkers with ease. The only real downside of this new card is its ultimate, which only creates you 10 1\/1 flying Faries. While this isn\u2019t bad, especially with buffs and token doublers, realistically, this card just feels like a support piece.<\/p>\n

MTG Grakk the Pacifist<\/p>\n

\"MTG<\/p>\n

For better or worse, it seems that not every new Mystery Booster 2 card is a powerhouse. While we can\u2019t see Grakk\u2019s stats or some of its text, its appeal does seem rather limited. From the looks of things, this card only triggers when enchanting an opponent\u2019s creatures, and even then only once per turn. While this could still be steady card draw for the right deck, realistically, it\u2019s unlikely to be a staple.<\/p>\n

MTG Davvol, Evincar of Rath<\/p>\n

\"MTG<\/p>\n

Despite having a very simple ability, Davvol, Evincar of Rath is an absolute monster of an MTG card. The life loss might not be ideal, but even with this restriction, it can easily create a mountain of value with the right support. Between Golgari go-wide decks that are constantly creating bodies and Aristocrats decks with consistent life gain, Davvol will have plenty of homes.<\/p>\n

Realistically, while it\u2019s still early days, Davvol has all the hallmarks of being worryingly expensive. Even with its color identity slightly limiting where it can see play, this card is definitely a future staple. With the availability of Mystery Booster Commander Edition expected to be very low, this is a very concerning thought.<\/p>\n

MTG The Madcap Jester<\/p>\n

\"MTG<\/p>\n

For a card named Madcap Jester, this Clown is surprisingly fair, in the grand scheme of MTG. Since it only works with exile effects that you control, and only lets you cast things temporarily, it\u2019s definitely got a few safety nets. That being said, with cards like Tasha\u2019s Hideous Laughter<\/a> and Ulamog, the Ceaseless Hunger<\/a>, stealing a bunch of cards at once is definitely possible.<\/p>\n

MTG Arzakon<\/p>\n

\"MTG<\/p>\n

As a planeswalker that\u2019s capable of making a Black Lotus token, Arzakon is incredibly exciting. Realistically, though, this Commander option is just okay, as it\u2019ll need a lot of support. Effects like Doubling Season<\/a> to get more tokens and starting Loyalty are a must, as are other planeswalkers and Proliferate effects.<\/p>\n

With this in mind, Arzakon feels like it\u2019ll mostly be confined to the 99 of Superfriends decks once it\u2019s publicly available. Technically, it could helm these lists, but realistically Atraxa<\/a>\u2019s in-built Proliferate is too good to ignore. Still, even if this card isn\u2019t the best new Commander, it\u2019s great to see such a fun design.<\/p>\n

MTG Chira, All In<\/p>\n

\"MTG<\/p>\n

Celebrating the random elements in MTG, Chira, All In is the new queen of gambling in Magic. Sadly, while Chira definitely looks like fun, it\u2019s unclear how strong a deck built around her will be. In theory, you can easily get tons of tokens and tapped Treasures; however, going all in may mean you 99 is rather wonky.<\/p>\n

While the raw power of Chira, All In might be unknown, this Commander could easily be quite nasty. Since luck-based effects are typically stronger than usual, Chira could easily push them over the edge. If you untap those treasures with an Amulet of Vigor<\/a>, too, then popping off could be inevitable.<\/p>\n

MTG Yume, Chronicler of Valor<\/p>\n

\"MTG<\/p>\n

Bringing back the Assist mechanic, Yume, Chronicler of Valor is a unique and potentially worthless Commander. If none of your opponents want to help out for card draw, this is basically a vanilla two-mana 1\/2. Obviously, this isn\u2019t great; however, some support pieces like Sylvan Offering<\/a> could tempt players.<\/p>\n

Realistically, it feels like Yume, Chronicler of Valor is destined to only see play in the 99 of Group Hug decks. Here, the allure of card draw should ideally be more tempting, especially since they only need to pay one. Whether or not this strategy will prove very effective, however, remains to be seen.<\/p>\n

MTG Chief Magistrate of Mercadia<\/p>\n

\"MTG<\/p>\n

As a throwback to 1999\u2019s Mercadian Masques, Chief Magistrate of Mercadia feels very tongue-in-cheek, but this card is nuts. So long as you can hang onto the Monarch, effectively doubling your board of creature tokens is an insane play. With the right support, doing this once could easily set you up for victory, and having it trigger twice is a death sentence.<\/p>\n

Given Chief Magistrate of Mercadia\u2019s Goblin focus, leaning into that with Krenko, Mob Boss<\/a>, quickly gets out of hand. Throw in an Anointed Procession<\/a> and Impact Tremors<\/a> for instant damage, and this Commander is genuinely scary.\u00a0<\/p>\n

MTG Kuroki, Thief of Talents<\/p>\n

\"MTG<\/p>\n

Depending on your luck, Kuroki, Thief of Talents is an insanely dangerous card for either you or your opponents. In an ideal situation, you\u2019ll find a key part of your opponent\u2019s deck if they choose to draw, allowing you to steal it. While this is a high ceiling, the possibility of it going wrong is incredibly high.<\/p>\n

Not only can you potentially find multiple strong threats, benefiting your opponent more, but you could miss entirely. Hell, your opponent could simply say no, too, and then you only get a pretty weak buff. With this in mind, it does feel like Kuroki, Thief of Talents is a bit of a trap.<\/p>\n

MTG Venser, Visionary Traveler<\/p>\n

\"MTG<\/p>\n

Offering a lot of support for any Flicker-focused deck in Commander, Venser, Visionary Traveler has a very interesting passive. Essentially, any creature you Flicker will come in with extra +1\/+1 Counters, potentially developing a quite scary board. Venser can even fuel this himself with his +1 ability, or punish opponents with his -2.<\/p>\n

While this all sounds well and good, sadly, Venser, Visionary Traveler is no Brago, King Eternal<\/a>. Due to this, Venser will likely be confined to the 99 of Flicker-based decks, rather than reaching its full potential.<\/p>\n

MTG Massimo, the Magician<\/p>\n

\"MTG<\/p>\n

If you like cantrips, or rather catrips, Massimo, the Magician is definitely the Commander for you. Allowing you to exile then repeatedly recast cheap spells when dealing damage, Massimo looks like a value machine. With plenty of creatures, not to mention Double Strike, you can easily set up a massive spellsling army.<\/p>\n

Notably, while Massimo, the Magician will mostly focus on cheap spells like Lightning Bolt<\/a>, it\u2019ll also work with Suspend spells. Since cards like Ancestral Vision<\/a> don\u2019t have a mana cost, Massimo can bypass the Suspend cost for insane value. With this in mind, Massimo, the Magician is an incredibly powerful new Spellslinging option that\u2019s definitely worth watching.\u00a0<\/p>\n

MTG Meatsqueak, Hoard Lord<\/p>\n

\"MTG<\/p>\n

If it weren\u2019t for its once-per-turn restriction, Meatsqueak, Hoard Lord would be an ungodly powerful card. Unfortunately, since this restriction is in place, its Food-generating ability is rather tame, limiting its potential without extra support. Thankfully, there is plenty of Food support in MTG, and this card can do work as a Secret Commander.<\/p>\n

Within a Ygra, Eater of All<\/a> deck, having tons of Food on the board is trivial, setting up huge buffs. Add in The Unbeatable Squirrel Girl<\/a> to the party, and you can make an army of mega-buffed Squirrels. While this would be hilarious, realistically, there are much safer ways to use Meatsqueak, including in the 99, where it should perform well.<\/p>\n

MTG Sifa Grent<\/p>\n

\"MTG<\/p>\n

As a planeswalker with a passive Aristocrats ability, Sifa Grent is naturally a shoo-in for the archetype. In theory, it could be a decent Rakdos Commander within that role; however, it\u2019s a bit steep at five mana. Curiously, its other abilities don\u2019t really support its passive either, as Goading and card stealing are completely different directions.<\/p>\n

While this might mean Sifa Grent struggles to find a home, equally, it\u2019s just generically powerful. If you\u2019ve got a spare slot within a Rakdos deck for a generally good card, then Sifa fills that void.<\/p>\n

MTG Olinda the Oblivious<\/p>\n

\"Olinda<\/p>\n

Considering how many Commander games can end up in a stalemate, Olinda the Oblivious is a deviously powerful MTG card. By dishing out \u201cOdor Counters\u201d onto your opponent\u2019s creatures, you can set up ever-decreasing clocks. Sadly, while evasion can further this strategy with Olinda as a Commander, she\u2019s realistically better in the 99.<\/p>\n

Within a Flicker-focused deck or Control deck, for instance, Olinda the Oblivious can easily work wonders as a grindy value engine. Even then, however, it does depend on all of your opponent\u2019s stonewalling each other, and not sacrificing their creatures.\u00a0<\/p>\n

MTG Olag and Miau, New Friends<\/p>\n

\"Olag<\/p>\n

Fusing Cat and Zombie Typal together, Olag and Miau, New Friends is a very strange MTG card. While we don\u2019t know who was clamoring for these types to come together, the result is actually pretty scary. Not only can each Cat and Zombie buff one another, but they set up huge life loss hits, too.<\/p>\n

Notably, Olag and Miau, New Friends doesn\u2019t care if the Cats and Zombies that enter are tokens or not. This can allow real shenanigans with token and counter doublers, potentially setting up massive swings. Additionally, tap effects like Cryptolith Rite<\/a> ensure maximum life loss, creating a deadly clock.<\/p>\n

MTG Nivea, Beloved Battlemage<\/p>\n

\"MTG<\/p>\n

As much as the ability to create a token of Akroma, Angel of Wrath<\/a> is wild, Nivea, Beloved Battlemage is a lot more than that. Essentially, Nivea prevents all of your creatures from dying to combat damage, removing any penalty from all-out swings. Naturally, this will work wonders within aggressive go-wide decks, and even on-color ones.<\/p>\n

MTG Zagorka, Mother of Sanctum<\/p>\n

\"MTG<\/p>\n

On the surface is an actively bad MTG card. By giving all of your opponents the option of creating a land, you can easily push them ahead. While this does sound bad, Zagorka, Mother of Sanctum is a Temur Group Hug card. Due to this, it\u2019s only a matter of time before those gifts catch up with your opponents and you win out of nowhere.<\/p>\n

Beyond just encouraging opponents to be nice to you, Zagorka actively stops attacking if the land is taken. This gives you a lot more safety than usual for a Group Hug deck, giving Zagorka even more power. So long as you can lull your opponents into a false sense of security, this Commander is going to be devastating.<\/p>\n

MTG Nephilim Epochal<\/p>\n

\"MTG<\/p>\n

Finally, MTG players have a Commander for the Nephilim cards in MTG. Beyond just being a legend for this archetype, Nephilim Epochal lets you tutor up and buff your Nephilim too. Sadly, while this does sound very powerful, there are still only five other Nephilim in MTG. Due to this, the actual playability of Nephilim Epochal is rather suspect, but it does work well with Changelings.<\/p>\n

Just Under Half<\/p>\n

Thanks to the early Draft of Mystery Booster Commander Edition at Gen Con, we\u2019ve already seen half of the set. According to Wizards, this set will feature 59 mechanically unique legends in total, and this is just 25 of them. While this is all very exciting, it\u2019s also honestly a bit scary, given their pricing potential.<\/p>\n

Even if these cards are available at MagicCons and in Festival in a Box-es, availability is a real concern. Many of these new unique legends look hugely playable, so supply might be far lower than desired. Hopefully, Wizards will be able to print tons of this product to mitigate this issue, but that remains to be seen for now.<\/p>\n

Ultimately, we\u2019ll just have to wait and see what happens when it comes to pricing and for any more reveals. While we\u2019ve already seen a ton of cards from the set, there\u2019s a chance even more haven\u2019t been posted yet.
