{"id":97730,"date":"2025-07-27T21:45:09","date_gmt":"2025-07-27T21:45:09","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/97730\/"},"modified":"2025-07-27T21:45:09","modified_gmt":"2025-07-27T21:45:09","slug":"this-dinosaur-probably-chirped-like-a-bird","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/97730\/","title":{"rendered":"This Dinosaur Probably Chirped Like a Bird"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Scientists have discovered a dinosaur that might have chirped like a bird, a finding that suggests the evolutionary origins of birdsong may be far more ancient than we previously thought.<\/p>\n<p>In a paper published last week in the journal <a href=\"https:\/\/peerj.com\/articles\/19664\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">PeerJ<\/a>, an international team of researchers describes a 163-million-year-old fossil found in northeastern China\u2019s Hebei Province. The fossil dinosaur, which they\u2019ve dubbed Pulaosaurus qinglong, measures just 28 inches (72 centimeters) and is largely complete, giving researchers an unusually detailed look at its anatomy, including its surprisingly birdlike throat.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cEven when you have a dinosaur skeleton preserved, you don\u2019t always have these isolated bones preserved with other skull elements,\u201d Xing Xu, a paleontologist at the Chinese Academy of Sciences in Beijing and an author of the paper, told <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2025\/07\/18\/science\/dinosaur-fossil-voice-china.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">The New York Times<\/a>. \u201cThey\u2019re very thin bones, very delicate and hard to preserve.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>In vertebrates, the vocal organs protect the airway and can produce sounds, including basic noises like hisses, groans, and grunts. In most living reptiles, these structures are made of cartilage and are relatively simple. Birds, however, have delicate, bony, flexible vocal organs that can make more complicated and diverse sounds.<\/p>\n<p>Pulaosuarus\u2019 throat seems somewhere between the two. Its vocal structures appear to be similar to that of another dinosaur, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nature.com\/articles\/s42003-023-04513-x\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Pinacosaurus<\/a>, a kind of <a href=\"https:\/\/gizmodo.com\/paleontologists-uncover-first-known-tracks-from-club-tailed-armored-dinosaur-2000588848\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">ankylosaur<\/a> with a large, bony larynx that may have been flexible enough to produce birdlike chirps and tweets, the researchers told the Times.<\/p>\n<p>The researchers believe that Pulaosaurus lived during the late Jurassic period and belonged to the same group of creatures that would later give rise to \u201cduck-billed\u201d dinosaurs like hadrosaurs. But Pulaosaurus and Pinacosaurus are separated by millions of years of evolution, and neither belong to <a href=\"https:\/\/gizmodo.com\/the-famous-fearsome-archaeopteryx-was-more-bird-than-we-knew-2000601981\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">the group of dinosaurs<\/a> that eventually produced birds.
