Illegal dumping prevention shows promise, but funding could dry up sooner than expected<\/p>\n
The nonprofit has also cleaned up roughly 226,000 square feet of area in the neighborhood, including at five illegal dumping hotspots. Duarte said signs advertising the voucher program at these hotspots have helped deter repeat dumping.<\/p>\n
\u201cThe signage itself was like, \u2018Hey, here\u2019s free money. Don\u2019t dump here,\u2019\u201d Duarte said. \u201cThat was enough for them to say, \u2018Wait a minute, if I don\u2019t dump here but somebody\u2019s giving me something for free, I\u2019d rather call this number.\u2019 And they\u2019re doing that.\u201d<\/p>\n
Gonzalez said illegal dumping in the neighborhood has not stopped completely, but it has improved.<\/p>\n
\u201cThe parks are cleaner, the area is cleaner near the daycares, the schools, the church and the community buildings,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n
Under its grant, the nonprofit\u2019s voucher program was originally intended to last three years, but Duarte said due to the program\u2019s popularity, North10 may end up exhausting the funding faster.<\/p>\n
\u201cWe\u2019re flying through it,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n
The nonprofit plans to apply for more funding to continue the program, she said.<\/p>\n
