A “successful” fitness journey usually gets measured in kilograms lost, inches off the waist, or a number on a weighing scale. Social media doesn’t help either. Those before-and-after pictures keep reinforcing the idea that looking thinner automatically means being healthier.Actor Sushmita Sen thinks the two shouldn’t be mixed up. Speaking at an event organized by India’s International Movement to Unite Nations (IIMUN) last year, she said there’s a big difference between being thin and actually being fit. She said, “Thin, being thin and being fit are very different things. Being thin is achievable very easily. I’ll introduce you to dietitians who will help you do it like this. But to be fit, you have to have mental health, you have to have physical audacity and discipline.”

9 Feb 2026 | 17:24

How has your idea of beauty changed over time? It’s a line that pushes back against one of the biggest myths around women’s fitness today that a smaller body automatically means a healthier one.

Thinness can be achieved but…

Sushmita wasn’t downplaying the importance of a healthy weight. She simply pointed out that how someone looks tells you very little about how healthy they actually are. “Fitness is about the complete body, mind, and your soul being aligned. That fitness requires you to have very strong mental aptitude and a great balance with your body’s fitness,” she said during the event.

Why mental health is a huge part of fitness

One of the most striking things about what Sushmita said is that she doesn’t treat physical health and mental wellbeing as two separate things. Fitness conversations, especially the ones online tend to revolve entirely around calories, workouts and protein, while completely skipping over stress, burnout, anxiety and emotional resilience.Discipline isn’t just waking up at 5 am to hit the gym. It’s also getting enough sleep, managing stress, actually resting properly, and showing up consistently, even on the days motivation just isn’t there. For Sushmita, that inner strength counts just as much as physical strength.

Her gym isn’t just about muscles

The actor also revealed that she doesn’t work out to build bigger muscles or chase a particular look. For her, exercise has become more of a way to reset her head whenever life starts feeling like too much. She says, “Don’t train to grow muscles necessarily. Through all of the crisis that I go through in my life, you hang two gymnastic rings from here, my life is made.”She added, “I can fix any problem by just going anti-gravity once. Because if I can do that, and I’m going to be 50 this year.”

A refreshing message in the age of transformation reels

Every single day, women scroll past endless “How I lost 25 kilos” videos, celebrity weight-loss stories, transformation reels. What rarely comes up in those posts are the deeper questions. Did the person actually get stronger? Can they climb a flight of stairs without getting breathless? Has their relationship with food gotten any better? Are they genuinely happier than before?Sushmita’s comments shift the whole conversation away from appearance and towards what your body can actually do. Instead of asking, “How small can my body get?” the question should be, “What is my body actually capable of?”

Fitness should add to your life, not take it over

Another big takeaway from what Sushmita’s saying is that working out shouldn’t feel like punishment. For a lot of women, exercise gets tangled up with guilt after eating dessert, panic before a wedding, or stress after noticing a bit of weight gain. Sushmita talks about movement completely differently. For her, it’s therapy and a way to get through the tougher phases of life.

Why this conversation matters for women

Women spend a huge chunk of their lives being told to become “less”. They lose weight, eat less, shrink your waist, fit into a smaller size. Real fitness isn’t about becoming smaller. It’s about being able to manage stress and simply feel good in your own body also.More women today are choosing strength training, functional fitness, yoga, Pilates and sport not to shrink themselves, but to build better bone density, a stronger heart, more mobility, and real confidence in what their bodies can do. Because in the end, the mirror will only ever tell you how you look. Your body will tell you how you actually feel. And that second answer is the one that really matters.

Image courtesy: Instagram/@sushmitasen47 For a lot of women, the word fitness has quietly turned into just another word…

[38
392564,1198,210,392571,392568,392570,392567,156890,392563,392569,67,132,68,392566,392565
post-978007","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","category-fitness","tag-difference-between-thin-and-fit","tag-fitness","tag-health","tag-healthy-lifestyle-for-women","tag-healthy-lifestyle-tips-for-women","tag-how-to-stay-fit-without-losing-weight","tag-importance-of-mental-health-in-fitness","tag-sushmita-sen","tag-sushmita-sen-fitness-advice","tag-sushmita-sen-gym-philosophy","tag-united-states","tag-unitedstates","tag-us","tag-why-fitness-is-more-than-weight-loss","tag-womens-health-and-fitness
["GET
