Visiting Chicago for work, Julie Radakovich and Sarah Arslanian strolled through Grant Park on Monday morning, just hours after the final performers of Lollapalooza 2026<\/a> left their stages, capping a four-day run that packed the park with an estimated 400,000 fans, brought out scores of musicians, drenched the grounds in rain and left behind acres of torn-up grass and brought its usual share of modest mayhem.<\/p>\n

The festival left the city with a familiar tally: 10 arrests, zero tickets issued and 67 trips to the hospital, according to the city\u2019s Office of Emergency Management and Communications \u2014 figures roughly in line with recent years. Lollapalooza\u2019s promoter, C3 Presents, is now on the hook for the cleanup, including what could be a costly restoration of Grant Park\u2019s grass, which had disappeared under the crowds by the festival\u2019s third day.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt certainly is a presence,\u201d Radakovich, 36, who hails from the Pacific Northwest, said of the festival that has made Grant Park home for more than 20 years. She and Arslanian, 56, of Canada, joined dog walkers and runners in weaving around roadblocks and cleanup crews while an artist on a nearby bench sketched a scene of the park \u2014 festival aftermath and all.<\/p>\n

Radakovich noted the event complicated sightseeing plans in nearby Millennium Park. \u201cI couldn\u2019t get to the Bean yesterday,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n

Social media posts showed festivalgoers splashing through puddles, mourning ruined shoes and wrestling in deep mud after the weekend rain. Organizers laid wood-chip mulch over the soggiest stretches of the festival grounds to keep people from slipping.<\/p>\n

At an unrelated news conference on Monday, Mayor Brandon Johnson declared the weekend a success, mess or not.<\/p>\n

\u201cIs it worth 400,000 people coming into our city over the course of four days, as a complement to having more visitors come to our city than any other time in the history of Chicago?\u201d Johnson asked rhetorically. \u201cAnd those young people that are here, they\u2019re just providing the prelude of what\u2019s to come. The top destination for college graduates is the city of Chicago. So we might as well get used to it, you all.\u201d<\/p>\n

Under the current 10-year contract, inked in November 2022, C3 Presents is responsible for general cleanup and trash removal from the festival grounds, the sidewalk and shrubbery along Columbus Drive, as well as the area around Buckingham Fountain and the sidewalk closest to Jean Baptiste Point DuSable Lake Shore Drive. The concert promotion company must also clean off posters and stickers hung by guerrilla marketers on the light poles lining Columbus and Congress.<\/p>\n

The most time-consuming part of the post-Lolla cleanup, though, is typically restoring Grant Park to its \u201cpre-load-in\u201d condition \u2014 replanting bushes, trees and flowers, fixing mesh fencing, seeding or sodding the festival grounds. The Chicago Park District and Lollapalooza organizers are required to assess the damage within a week of the festival\u2019s last day and agree on a restoration plan.<\/p>\n
