Genetic evidence has recently proved they were onto something.<\/p>\n<p>In a newly published <a style=\"font-size: 18px;\" href=\"https:\/\/doi.org\/10.1126\/science.aee6957\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Science study<\/a>, scientists revisited two mummies recovered from northern Chile in 1990 and performed an advanced DNA analysis of their genomes. The individuals, who presumably died between the late 15th and early 17th centuries, hosted a lost strain of variola viruses that cause smallpox\u2014specifically the kind known to have affected Europeans around the same time period.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis discovery provides the first molecular confirmation that smallpox was carried to the Americas during the colonial period,\u201d Shigeki Nakagome, the study\u2019s co-author and a geneticist at Trinity College Dublin in Ireland, said in a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.tcd.ie\/news_events\/top-stories\/featured\/ancient-smallpox-genomes\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">statement<\/a>. \u201cBut beyond tracing the disease\u2019s arrival, our study also sheds new light on how smallpox evolved.\u201d<\/p>\n<p> Unexpected discoveries <\/p>\n<p>As often happens with major discoveries, the team wasn\u2019t looking for what it ended up finding, which in this case was traces of ancient smallpox DNA. Initially, the researchers wanted to study the ancestry and population history of people from northern Chile, Constanza de la Fuente Castro, the study\u2019s co-author and an anthropologist at the University of Chile, told <a href=\"https:\/\/www.scientificamerican.com\/article\/chilean-mummies-reveal-a-lost-lineage-of-smallpox\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Scientific American<\/a>. This was why the team revisited the mummies, which featured a woman in her 30s and a man around his 20s, both likely Inca and buried at an Indigenous site.<\/p>\n<p>Further DNA analysis of the individuals revealed traces of smallpox\u2014nearly identical in both mummies\u2014which suggests that the two died during the same outbreak, de la Fuente Castro explained to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.science.org\/content\/article\/ancient-dna-confirms-historical-accounts-how-smallpox-got-americas\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Science<\/a>. According to the study, the virus strain evolutionarily lies between the types known in medieval Europe and those that circulated much later. It appears that the virus evolved much slower during the height of colonial expansion.<\/p>\n<p>This was due to the lack of immunity in newly exposed populations\u2014Indigenous communities\u2014which meant it could \u201cspread successfully with little further adaptation,\u201d Lara Cassidy, the study\u2019s co-author and a geneticist at Trinity College Dublin, explained in the statement. That was until around the 19th century, when English physician Edward Jenner <a href=\"https:\/\/www.who.int\/news-room\/spotlight\/history-of-vaccination\/history-of-smallpox-vaccination\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">introduced<\/a> a vaccine for smallpox.<\/p>\n<p>Faced with this barrier, so to speak, the virus resumed evolving again, although an overall increase in vaccination also meant more people were protected against the disease. (In 1980, the World Health Organization <a href=\"https:\/\/apps.who.int\/iris\/bitstream\/handle\/10665\/39253\/a41438.pdf\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">declared<\/a> smallpox officially eradicated.)<\/p>\n<p> Another beginning <\/p>\n<p>Researchers who were not involved in the new research commended the study\u2019s findings.
