{"id":980347,"date":"2026-08-04T15:44:19","date_gmt":"2026-08-04T15:44:19","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/980347\/"},"modified":"2026-08-04T15:44:19","modified_gmt":"2026-08-04T15:44:19","slug":"san-antonio-school-meal-program-changes-what-parents-need-to-know-before-first-day","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/980347\/","title":{"rendered":"San Antonio school meal program changes: What parents need to know before first day"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"Box-_wrDxHtU__Box-sc-10sa3ie-0 Text-nO2aZ44r__TextBase-sc-s2hv5x-0 jJNfBD fSvavs article-text\"><strong>SAN ANTONIO<\/strong> \u2013 A federal <a href=\"https:\/\/www.fna.usda.gov\/cn\/cep-final-rule-summary\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">free meal program<\/a> used by thousands of San Antonio families is changing \u2014 and some parents may not realize their child\u2019s school no longer qualifies for automatic coverage.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Box-_wrDxHtU__Box-sc-10sa3ie-0 Text-nO2aZ44r__TextBase-sc-s2hv5x-0 jJNfBD fSvavs article-text\">With school starting next week for many San Antonio-area districts, time is running short for families to take action.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Box-_wrDxHtU__Box-sc-10sa3ie-0 Text-nO2aZ44r__TextBase-sc-s2hv5x-0 jJNfBD fSvavs article-text\">The Community Eligibility Provision (CEP) was directly affected after the U.S. Department of Agriculture changed its eligibility requirements following a new law passed by Congress that affected the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP).<\/p>\n<p class=\"Box-_wrDxHtU__Box-sc-10sa3ie-0 Text-nO2aZ44r__TextBase-sc-s2hv5x-0 jJNfBD fSvavs article-text\">Stricter federal and state SNAP changes reduced overall program enrollment, which in turn lowered the number of students schools need to qualify for CEP.<\/p>\n<p>Biggest local impact: North East ISD<\/p>\n<p class=\"Box-_wrDxHtU__Box-sc-10sa3ie-0 Text-nO2aZ44r__TextBase-sc-s2hv5x-0 jJNfBD fSvavs article-text\">One of the most significant changes is at North East Independent School District, where at least 30 campuses lost the free meals program, according to district officials.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Box-_wrDxHtU__Box-sc-10sa3ie-0 Text-nO2aZ44r__TextBase-sc-s2hv5x-0 jJNfBD fSvavs article-text\">Sharon Glosson, NEISD\u2019s executive director of school nutrition, said the shift is being felt across the district.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Box-_wrDxHtU__Box-sc-10sa3ie-0 Text-nO2aZ44r__TextBase-sc-s2hv5x-0 jJNfBD fSvavs article-text\">\u201cIt does have a big impact because many of our families really appreciated the free meals for their students even if they didn\u2019t qualify individually for free and reduced price meals,\u201d Glosson said. \u201cWe saw that it helped with more students participating in the meal program. They felt comfortable because everyone qualified for the program.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>What San Antonio-area parents need to do now<\/p>\n<p class=\"Box-_wrDxHtU__Box-sc-10sa3ie-0 Text-nO2aZ44r__TextBase-sc-s2hv5x-0 jJNfBD fSvavs article-text\">For schools that lost CEP status, parents can fill out an application to regain it \u2014 and officials say it takes only minutes to complete. The form is available online and can be found on each district\u2019s website.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Box-_wrDxHtU__Box-sc-10sa3ie-0 Text-nO2aZ44r__TextBase-sc-s2hv5x-0 jJNfBD fSvavs article-text\">NEISD\u2019s online portal for the application <a href=\"https:\/\/www.schoolcafe.com\/NorthEastISD\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">can be found here<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Box-_wrDxHtU__Box-sc-10sa3ie-0 Text-nO2aZ44r__TextBase-sc-s2hv5x-0 jJNfBD fSvavs article-text\">Glosson stressed that no student will go hungry, but said it\u2019s critical that parents apply as soon as possible.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Box-_wrDxHtU__Box-sc-10sa3ie-0 Text-nO2aZ44r__TextBase-sc-s2hv5x-0 jJNfBD fSvavs article-text\">If an application is denied, Glosson encourages parents to apply again.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Box-_wrDxHtU__Box-sc-10sa3ie-0 Text-nO2aZ44r__TextBase-sc-s2hv5x-0 jJNfBD fSvavs article-text\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.saisd.net\/page\/menus\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">San Antonio ISD<\/a> had not confirmed whether all of its campuses will retain CEP coverage.
