A British surgeon has lost his job after mistakenly sewing his patient\u2019s organs together, creating a \u201cclosed loop\u201d that prevented bowel movements \u2014 and was nearly deadly.<\/p>\n

According to statements given to the Medical Practitioners Tribunal Service<\/a>, the patient had undergone emergency bowel surgery for tumor removal by NHS surgeon Dr. Yasser Adly Abdel Rahman at Royal Oldham Hospital in Greater Manchester.<\/p>\n

Rahman and another surgeon decided to perform a procedure that was \u201cnot known to man\u201d that connects the small intestine and stomach.<\/p>\n

However, a \u201cmajor surgical error\u201d was made by accidentally connecting the wrong part of the intestine to the stomach in an operation that was deemed \u201cnot compatible with life,\u201d according to expert testimonials.<\/p>\n

This resulted in a loop where the patient\u2019s bowel contents had \u201cnowhere to go apart from back into the stomach in a circular fashion.\u201d<\/p>\n

Despite the patient reporting increasing pain and vomiting with no bowel movements for weeks afterwards, Rahman seemed unconcerned, according to a nurse.<\/p>\n

The doctor even told the patient and their family that \u201call the signs are saying\u201d that his bowels would work soon.<\/p>\n

Rahman and his colleague had decided to connect the two organs to maintain digestive and bowel continuity, and had even tested for no obstructions.<\/p>\n

A month after the initial procedure, Dr. Anthony Rate, another colorectal surgeon at the same hospital, took over care after the patient\u2019s family raised concerns.<\/p>\n

Rate performed a second surgery and managed to salvage some of the bowel by giving the patient a stoma<\/a>, a surgical opening in the abdomen for waste to come out.<\/p>\n

An expert witness at the tribunal, former consultant general and colorectal surgeon Anthony Blower, said Rahman\u2019s decision was \u201cas bad as it gets for a consultant surgeon.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201c[The patient] would have died in the post-operative period if it was not for the intervention,\u201d Blower said in court.<\/p>\n

He added that the initial move connecting the stomach and intestine would have been \u201cextremely difficult\u201d to perform because of the huge tumor present in the patient.<\/p>\n

\u201cDr. Abdel Rahman\u2019s procedure can at best be described as bizarre and was a totally unconventional operation that is not compatible with life,\u201d Blower said.<\/p>\n

\u201cPatient A would have died in the post-operative period if it was not for the intervention of Mr Rate.\u201d<\/p>\n

During the tribunal, Rahman believed there was a \u201cwitch hunt\u201d against him, claiming he had never had a single complaint among his \u201cunblemished record\u201d of 30 years.<\/p>\n

Regardless of the doctor\u2019s claims, the tribunal decided Rahman had given no \u201cremorse, empathy, or recognition of the impact on\u201d the patient and \u201cno attempt at an apology.\u201d<\/p>\n
