{"id":980573,"date":"2026-08-04T18:13:15","date_gmt":"2026-08-04T18:13:15","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/980573\/"},"modified":"2026-08-04T18:13:15","modified_gmt":"2026-08-04T18:13:15","slug":"bono-eddie-vedder-join-hundreds-of-mourners-at-the-funeral-of-musician-glen-hansard","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/980573\/","title":{"rendered":"Bono, Eddie Vedder join hundreds of mourners at the funeral of musician Glen Hansard"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>DUBLIN (AP) \u2014 Hundreds of mourners including Irish musicians and entertainers filled a Dublin cathedral on Tuesday for the funeral of Academy Award-winning singer-songwriter <a class=\"Link AnClick-LinkEnhancement\" data-gtm-enhancement-style=\"LinkEnhancementA\" href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/glen-hansard-dies-dublin-motorcycle-crash-2df53656c036a9e39f91514d25538311\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Glen Hansard<\/a>, who died in a motorcycle crash last week at the age of 56.<\/p>\n<p>Actors Steve Coogan and Chris O\u2019Dowd and musicians including Bono, Hozier, Declan O\u2019Rourke and Imelda May were in the congregation alongside friends, family and fans who had queued for hours outside St. Patrick\u2019s Cathedral.<\/p>\n<p>A large crowd watched on big screens outside as pallbearers carried a wicker coffin topped with flowers into the cathedral.<\/p>\n<p>William Morton, the dean of the cathedral, said: \u201cGlen\u2019s remarkable gifts and outstanding talent, which touched so many hearts, took him from the streets of Dublin to audiences across the globe.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The funeral service was interwoven with music, including a performance by Pearl Jam\u2019s Eddie Vedder, who sang Hansard\u2019s \u201cThe Song of Good Hope\u201d alongside Hansard\u2019s longstanding musical partner Mark\u00e9ta Irglov\u00e1.<\/p>\n<p>U2\u2019s Bono said of Hansard: \u201cEveryone who met him, they just remembered the day they met him.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Bono held up his phone to play a message he\u2019d received from singer and poet Patti Smith performing \u201ca lullaby for Glen\u2019s family and friends,\u201d before reciting lyrics to U2\u2019s \u201cBeautiful Day.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Hansard was killed in a single-vehicle crash on the outskirts of Dublin on July 29, hours after taking part in a trad music session at a pub.<\/p>\n<p>His widow, Finnish poet Maire Saaritsa, who thanked the police officers who came to his aid, read a poem she had written for him early in their relationship.<\/p>\n<p>She said the couple\u2019s 3-year-old son was too young to attend or understand the funeral, but \u201cthe bright spirit he inherited from his father is with us.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Hansard was the longtime front man of Irish rock band The Frames and played a member of a Dublin soul band in the hit 1991 movie \u201cThe Commitments.\u201d He won an Oscar in 2008 for the song \u201cFalling Slowly\u201d from the movie \u201cOnce,\u201d in which he co-starred with Irglov\u00e1. A stage adaptation won eight Tony Awards in 2012.<\/p>\n<p>Hansard also was half of rock duo The Swell Season with Irglov\u00e1 and released solo albums including \u201cDidn\u2019t He Ramble,\u201d which was nominated for a Grammy for Best Folk Album in 2016.<\/p>\n<p>For many years he led a Christmas Eve busk outside Dublin\u2019s Gaiety Theatre, where members of the public gathered to see famous Irish musicians perform in aid of a homelessness charity.<\/p>\n<p>Tributes have been paid by fellow musicians.
