{"id":980598,"date":"2026-08-04T18:26:20","date_gmt":"2026-08-04T18:26:20","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/980598\/"},"modified":"2026-08-04T18:26:20","modified_gmt":"2026-08-04T18:26:20","slug":"chargers-return-to-san-diego-with-tribute-to-billy-ray-smith","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/980598\/","title":{"rendered":"Chargers return to San Diego with tribute to Billy Ray Smith"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The Los Angeles Chargers\u2019 return to San Diego will carry a tribute to one of the franchise\u2019s most beloved former players.<\/p>\n<p>Head coach Jim Harbaugh announced that players will wear blue <a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/alexinsdorf99\/status\/2084678604529524998\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">circular \u201cBR\u201d decals<\/a> on their white practice helmets during the team\u2019s two days in San Diego, honoring <a href=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/2026\/07\/30\/sports\/billy-ray-smith-jr-chargers-legend-and-college-football-hall-of-famer-dead-after-journey-with-dementia-caused-by-cte\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">former linebacker Billy Ray Smith Jr., who recently died at 64<\/a>. <\/p>\n<p>His family said he died following a battle with dementia caused by CTE.<\/p>\n<p><img style=\"aspect-ratio:0.79980469;display:block\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" data-modal-image=\"40185344\" width=\"472\" height=\"590\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/chargers-wear-emblem-honoring-legend-136460207.jpg\" alt=\"Chargers players will wear \u201cBR\u201d helmet decals in San Diego to honor franchise legend Billy Ray Smith, who died at 64 after battling CTE.\" class=\"wp-image-40185344\"  \/>The Chargers will wear an emblem honoring legend Billy Ray Smith Jr. after he passed away. X\/@chargers<\/p>\n<p>Smith spent his entire 10-year NFL career with the Chargers after the organization selected him fifth overall out of Arkansas in 1983. <\/p>\n<p>He appeared in 126 games, made 111 starts and finished with 26.5 sacks, 15 interceptions and 14 fumble recoveries. (Getty Images North America) Getty Images<\/p>\n<p>Chargers owner Dean Spanos <a href=\"https:\/\/www.chargers.com\/news\/billy-ray-smith-passing-obit\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">remembered Smith<\/a> as \u201clarger than life,\u201d praising the smile, laughter and generosity that made him a cherished teammate, friend and community figure.<\/p>\n<p>The San Diego trip also includes the inaugural USAA Salute to Service Boot Camp at USD\u2019s Torero Stadium. Following practice, 200 local military members will receive an opportunity to train like Chargers players and compete in NFL Combine-style drills.<\/p>\n<p>For two days, the Chargers will reconnect
