{"id":980883,"date":"2026-08-04T21:30:17","date_gmt":"2026-08-04T21:30:17","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/980883\/"},"modified":"2026-08-04T21:30:17","modified_gmt":"2026-08-04T21:30:17","slug":"italy-may-help-verify-hezbollah-free-zones-under-lebanon-disarmament-plan","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/980883\/","title":{"rendered":"Italy may help verify Hezbollah free zones under Lebanon disarmament plan"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The latest round of US-facilitated talks between Israel and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.jpost.com\/tags\/lebanon\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Lebanon<\/a> began on Tuesday in Rome and will continue through Thursday.<\/p>\n<p>The discussions concern which country, or countries, will be responsible for verifying that areas entered by the Lebanese Armed Forces under the pilot phase of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.jpost.com\/middle-east\/article-904376\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Hezbollah\u2019s<\/a> disarmament are free of both Hezbollah operatives and the group\u2019s weapons, three sources familiar with the talks have told The Jerusalem Post.<\/p>\n<p class=\"article-paragraph-section article-body-paragraph\">Italy might be one of the countries, the sources said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"article-paragraph-section article-body-paragraph\">The talks were under way, US State Department spokesperson Tommy Pigott said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"article-paragraph-section article-body-paragraph\">\u201cThe United States remains fully committed to supporting both governments as they carry this process forward in a manner that delivers lasting security for both countries, eliminates security threats to Israel, and restores Lebanese state authority throughout the south,\u201d he wrote on X\/Twitter.<\/p>\n<p class=\"article-paragraph-section article-body-paragraph\">On Tuesday, Lebanese Army Commander Gen. Rodolphe Haykal met with the commander of Italy\u2019s Joint Operations Command, Lt.-Gen. Giovanni Maria Iannucci. They discussed \u201cthe overall situation, recent developments, ways to support the Lebanese Army in light of the challenges it faces, and the available options for the period following the end of UNIFIL\u2019s mission,\u201d the Lebanese Army said.<\/p>\n<p>At the outset of the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.jpost.com\/middle-east\/article-904530\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">negotiations<\/a>, Israel insisted that it should be the party authorized to enter areas secured by the Lebanese Armed Forces so that it can provide the final confirmation they had been cleared of Hezbollah\u2019s presence.<\/p>\n<p class=\"article-paragraph-section article-body-paragraph\">Following strong opposition from the Lebanese government, however, Israeli, Lebanese, and US officials began discussing which country, or countries, could verify that the areas are free of Hezbollah personnel and weapons.<\/p>\n<p>Israel and the US are firmly opposed to extending the mandate of the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.jpost.com\/tags\/united-nations-interim-force-in-lebanon\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">UN Interim Force in Lebanon<\/a>\u00a0(UNIFIL), which is set to expire at the end of this year.
