{"id":981869,"date":"2026-08-05T07:49:12","date_gmt":"2026-08-05T07:49:12","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/981869\/"},"modified":"2026-08-05T07:49:12","modified_gmt":"2026-08-05T07:49:12","slug":"trump-says-deal-to-reopen-strait-of-hormuz-could-come-as-early-as-wednesday-2","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/981869\/","title":{"rendered":"Trump says deal to reopen Strait of Hormuz could come as early as Wednesday"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>CAIRO (AP) \u2014 U.S. President Donald Trump said a deal on the Strait of Hormuz could come as early as Wednesday or Thursday, while Iran and Oman inched toward an agreement to reopen the critical waterway and potentially help bring an <a class=\"Link AnClick-LinkEnhancement\" data-gtm-enhancement-style=\"LinkEnhancementA\" href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/hub\/iran\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">end to the war<\/a>. <\/p>\n<p>Trump was asked by reporters traveling with him in California about a report on the Axios news site that an announcement on the Strait of Hormuz could be made on Wednesday.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt could happen. Tomorrow or the next day,\u201d he said, speaking on Tuesday evening California time, which was already Wednesday morning in the Middle East. \u201cA lot of progress has been made.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Oil prices eased on hopes of progress for a deal that would allow oil tankers to freely exit the Persian Gulf again and deliver crude around the world. Brent crude, the international standard, slipped by 1.2% to $78.43 per barrel early Wednesday. <\/p>\n<p>The agreement would see routes controlled by Iran and Oman, regional officials tell AP<\/p>\n<p>The <a class=\"Link AnClick-LinkEnhancement\" data-gtm-enhancement-style=\"LinkEnhancementA\" href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/iran-us-war-strait-hormuz-oman-diplomacy-6587f90f2ab5beec373ce5fabf637541\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">possible agreement emerging<\/a> from talks between Iran and Oman calls for ships to enter the Persian Gulf through an Iranian-controlled route and exit through a route controlled by Oman, two regional officials told The Associated Press. Service fees would be charged for providing security and preserving the maritime environment, the officials said.<\/p>\n<p>The officials spoke on condition of anonymity to discuss the sensitive negotiations.<\/p>\n<p>The Trump administration has <a class=\"Link AnClick-LinkEnhancement\" data-gtm-enhancement-style=\"LinkEnhancementA\" href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/asean-rubio-south-china-sea-iran-war-12b3a257be0b6af9d96356dd78be3cfd\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">previously ruled out any deal<\/a> that would give Iran control over the strait, which was an open international waterway before the the U.S. and Israel <a class=\"Link AnClick-LinkEnhancement\" data-gtm-enhancement-style=\"LinkEnhancementA\" href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/iran-us-explosion-tehran-c2f11247d8a66e36929266f2c557a54c\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">attacked Iran on Feb. 28<\/a>. About one fifth of the world\u2019s oil and natural gas passed through the strait, but shipping through the waterway has been reduced to a trickle at best by Iran\u2019s attacks since the start of the war.<\/p>\n<p>In an exchange with reporters on Monday, the U.S. president reiterated his public opposition to tolls being charged in the strait. \u201cI\u2019m not going to let them charge,\u201d Trump said. \u201cAnybody\u2019s going to charge, we\u2019ll charge.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The regional officials said negotiations are still underway and that the final agreement could take a different form, with any deal linked to lifting the U.S. blockade on Iran\u2019s ports.<\/p>\n<p>US and Iranian officials say progress is being made<\/p>\n<p>Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesman Esmail Baghaei said Tuesday that Tehran\u2019s talks with Oman were focused on \u201cestablishing safe inbound and outbound shipping lanes,\u201d routes that \u201cuphold sovereign rights while also addressing the national security considerations of both Iran and Oman.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe final results of these negotiations will be announced once concluded,\u201d he added, according to Iran\u2019s state-run IRNA news agency.<\/p>\n<p>U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio confirmed progress had been made in those talks, \u201cbut not finality yet.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>    <a class=\"AnchorLink\" id=\"html-embed-module-a00000\"\/><\/p>\n<p>\n    <strong>Sign up for Morning Wire:<\/strong><br \/>\n    Our flagship newsletter breaks down the biggest headlines of the day.\n  <\/p>\n<p>Rubio has previously ruled out any deal that would give Iran control over the strait, saying last month that would create a <a class=\"Link AnClick-LinkEnhancement\" data-gtm-enhancement-style=\"LinkEnhancementA\" href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/asean-rubio-south-china-sea-iran-war-12b3a257be0b6af9d96356dd78be3cfd\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">\u201cvery dangerous precedent\u201d<\/a> for other parts of the world.<\/p>\n<p>U.S. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent <a class=\"Link AnClick-LinkEnhancement\" data-gtm-enhancement-style=\"LinkEnhancementA\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/2026\/08\/04\/bessent-says-there-may-be-deal-tuesday-or-wednesday-to-open-strait-of-hormuz-with-freedom-of-movement.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">told CNBC<\/a> that \u201cthere is a chance we may have a deal today or tomorrow to open the strait and move towards a more normalized position in this conflict.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Arab countries seek to broker an end to the war<\/p>\n<p>Qatar\u2019s emir, Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani, said he also spoke to Trump by phone on Tuesday as the Arab country tries to broker a resolution to the war.<\/p>\n<p>Al Thani\u2019s office said the two discussed ways to bridge the divide \u201cin a way that enhances the prospects of reaching a sustainable diplomatic settlement to the crisis.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Trump is under mounting pressure to end <a class=\"Link AnClick-LinkEnhancement\" data-gtm-enhancement-style=\"LinkEnhancementA\" href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/trump-approval-iran-war-poll-republicans-election-55e9c80afec521d87f131393a59674c0\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">an unpopular war<\/a> that has driven up gas prices ahead of midterm elections and <a class=\"Link AnClick-LinkEnhancement\" data-gtm-enhancement-style=\"LinkEnhancementA\" href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/iran-war-patriot-thaad-missile-defense-trump-feda2255d8adbfff797da8d3ac8e3033\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">drawn down U.S. supplies of some munitions<\/a>. In recent days, he has again alternately threatened massive strikes and voiced support for diplomatic efforts.<\/p>\n<p>Trump said Monday that the U.S. was in talks with Iran, saying it was Tehran\u2019s <a class=\"Link AnClick-LinkEnhancement\" data-gtm-enhancement-style=\"LinkEnhancementA\" href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/trump-iran-war-gulf-allies-fb81a68f999f4a7b0498ae71cbffe8e5\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">\u201clast chance\u201d<\/a> to reach a deal and avoid another U.S. military escalation.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe first phase is the opening of the straits. The second phase will be the denuclearization,\u201d Trump said. \u201cAnd that will take a little while.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Iran has denied it is negotiating with the U.S., saying the talks are only with Oman.<\/p>\n<p>Ships attacked in Strait of Hormuz and in Red Sea<\/p>\n<p>An Indian-flagged commercial ship sank Tuesday in the Red Sea off Yemen after being struck by an explosive-laden boat, Yemeni and Indian authorities said.<\/p>\n<p>Yemen\u2019s coast guard rescued the crew, which included 13 Indians and a Yemeni.<\/p>\n<p>There was no immediate claim of responsibility, but Yemen\u2019s Iran-backed Houthi militants have repeatedly struck ships traversing the Red Sea near Yemen.<\/p>\n<p>Last month, the Houthis announced they were closing the Bab el-Mandeb Strait that leads to the Red Sea for Saudi-linked shipping in retaliation for the kingdom\u2019s blockade on Yemen and an attack on the international airport in Yemen\u2019s rebel-held capital, Sanaa.<\/p>\n<p>Earlier Tuesday, a cargo ship reported being \u201chit by an unknown projectile\u201d while traversing the Strait of Hormuz, according to the United Kingdom Maritime Trade Operations Center.<\/p>\n<p>The center said the reported strike damaged the vessel at around 2 a.m. local time while it was about 37 kilometers (23 miles) northeast of Al Khasab, a port city in Oman.
