Flashback:<\/strong> Aug. 5, 1924<\/p>\n 1924:<\/strong> New York Daily News readers were introduced to Harold Gray\u2019s Annie<\/a>, the feisty yet lovable preteen girl with no mother or father. Miss Asthma ran the big-city orphanage where she lived.<\/p>\n \u201cAt the time, little boy strips were all the rage,\u201d Gray told the Tribune in 1946. \u201cThat\u2019s one reason\u00a0I decided on a little girl<\/a>. I chose an orphan because I didn\u2019t want to get involved with a lot of extraneous relatives. I wanted a simple story built around a character who would be as real to readers as Annie was to me.\u201d<\/p>\n Annie was Gray\u2019s only child, since he had none of his own. Unlike the James Whitcomb Riley poem, however, the comic strip\u2019s target audience was not children.<\/p>\n \u201cIt isn\u2019t the kids who buy the papers, it\u2019s their parents,\u201d Gray said.<\/p>\n The Tribune Syndicate (now Tribune Content Agency<\/a>) helped spread comic strips including \u201cLittle Orphan Annie,\u201d \u201cGasoline Alley,\u201d \u201cMoon Mullins\u201d and \u201cTerry and the Pirates,\u201d and other editorial products to newspapers across the world.<\/p>\n Vintage Chicago Tribune: \u2018Little Orphan Annie,\u2019 from poem to paper, and to stage and screen<\/a><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n Weather records <\/strong>(from the National Weather Service, Chicago<\/a>)<\/p>\n 1835:<\/strong> An ordinance was passed outlawing as a fire hazard the stacking of feed hay<\/a> in downtown Chicago.<\/p>\n 1935:<\/strong> Leo Burnett<\/a> started the Chicago ad agency<\/a> that created the Jolly Green Giant, Pillsbury Doughboy and Morris the Cat<\/a> commercials.<\/p>\n 1955:\u00a0<\/strong>Capt. George A. Stone, the pilot of a Northwest Orient Airlines Stratocruiser, was credited when all 68 people survived<\/a> a crash landing at Chicago\u2019s Midway Airport. The crash occurred in the same area as a Braniff International Airways on\u00a0July 17, 1955.<\/p>\n Vintage Chicago Tribune: Plane crashes that stunned our city<\/a><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n \u201cStone told officials of Northwest Orient Airlines that the propellers of the plane failed to reverse as he made a normal landing after a flight from Minneapolis,\u201d the Tribune reported.<\/p>\n 1966:<\/strong> During a march in Marquette Park<\/a> to protest racial inequality in housing, Martin Luther King Jr.<\/a> was struck by a rock.<\/p>\n Vintage Chicago Tribune: The Rev. Martin Luther King Jr.\u2019s historic march through Marquette Park<\/a><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n \u201cI\u2019ve been in many demonstrations all across the South, but I can say that I have never seen \u2014 even in Mississippi and Alabama \u2014 mobs as hostile and as hate-filled as I\u2019ve seen here in Chicago,\u201d King told reporters afterward.<\/p>\n 2010:<\/strong> President Barack Obama told autoworkers at a Southeast Side Ford plant that his bailout push helped save an \u201cindustry on the brink.\u201d<\/a><\/p>\n \u201cI refuse to walk away from this industry and American jobs.
