James Gray opens, Ava DuVernay closes"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>By JAKE COYLE, AP Film Writer<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>NEW YORK (AP) \u2014 The <a href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/new-york-film-festival-daniel-daylewis-scorsese-70e27b895007d651ede18ca17ddbb9d6\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">New York Film Festival<\/a> has unveiled the main slate of films to its 64th edition, including works from James Gray, Ava DuVernay and Tony Gilroy.<\/p>\n<p>Organizers for Film at Lincoln Center on Wednesday announced the 32 films selected for its prestigious main slate lineup, all of which will play at the festival running Sept. 25 to Oct. 12. Kicking off the festival will be <a href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/paper-tiger-miles-teller-james-gray-cannes-d3a43fb0633e7c8e3aea6ad4e79347cd\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Gray\u2019s \u201cPaper Tiger,\u201d<\/a> a Queens-set crime drama starring Adam Driver and Miles Teller.<\/p>\n<p>While few of the festival\u2019s selections will be making their world premiere in New York, one exception is Gilroy\u2019s \u201cBehemoth!\u201d starring Pedro Pascal as a cellist. The festival is making \u201cBehemoth!\u201d its centerpiece gala. Also making its world premiere is <a href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/ava-duvernay-documentary-14th-amendment-birthright-citizenship-7cff519af10147b8059d0bd55ee78a0f\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Ava DuVernay\u2019s \u201c14th,\u201d<\/a> a documentary on the much-contested constitutional amendment and a kind of sequel to her \u201c13th\u201d documentary. DuVernay\u2019s latest will close the festival.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\" lazyautosizes lazyload\" alt=\"Pedro Pascal in a scene from &quot;Behemoth!&quot;\" width=\"2233\" data- src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/Film-NYFF_Lineup_35888.jpg\" data-attachment-id=\"14423396\" \/>FILE \u2013 This image released by Searchlight Pictures shows Pedro Pascal in a scene from \u201cBehemoth!\u201d (Searchlight Pictures via AP)<\/p>\n<p>In between, the festival\u2019s principle lineup will feature many filmmakers who have previously brought films to the NYFF, including Pedro Almodovar (\u201cBitter Christmas\u201d), Ryusuke Hamaguchi ( <a href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/cannes-ryusuke-hamaguchi-fd345b6d2ca89bfd8a00f704a624184d\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">\u201cAll of a Sudden\u201d<\/a> ), Andrew Haigh (\u201cA Long Winter\u201d), Radu Jude (\u201cThe Diary of a Chambermaid\u201d), Lee Chang-dong (\u201cPossible Love\u201d), Mike Leigh (\u201cTender Loving Care\u201d), Pawel Pawlikowski ( <a href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/sandra-huller-fatherland-cannes-3bab5df44f9700a12c0c1255b5480f01\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">\u201cFatherland\u201d<\/a> ) and Ira Sachs ( <a href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/cannes-film-actor-rami-malek-ira-sachs-director-b3cab91179f2a35408b6b31482e8365d\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">\u201cThe Man I Love\u201d<\/a> ).<\/p>\n<p>Other selections include Chris Rock\u2019s \u201cMisty Green,\u201d which will first premiere <a href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/tiff-toronto-film-festival-65b104e2680b07042cd8a5651743739e\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">at the Toronto International Film Festival<\/a>, William and David Greaves\u2019 acclaimed documentary <a href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/once-upon-a-time-harlem-cannes-f73e30a703c1a68d3522f651e9aa8b38\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">\u201cOnce Upon a Time in Harlem\u201d<\/a> and Julia Loktev\u2019s \u201cMy Undesirable Friends: Part II \u2014 Exile,\u201d the continuation of the Russian filmmaker\u2019s sprawling documentary of modern-day dissent in Russia.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s hard to recall a prior main slate program in which the state of the world has been as urgently reflected in so many creative ways,\u201d Dennis Lim, artistic director of the festival, said in a statement. \u201cYou could take any cross section of this lineup and come away with a vivid picture of what our present looks, sounds, and feels like.
