{"id":982979,"date":"2026-08-05T19:55:16","date_gmt":"2026-08-05T19:55:16","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/982979\/"},"modified":"2026-08-05T19:55:16","modified_gmt":"2026-08-05T19:55:16","slug":"drug-resistant-superbug-spreading-across-us-has-hit-nj","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/982979\/","title":{"rendered":"Drug-resistant &#8216;superbug&#8217; spreading across US has hit NJ"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>A drug-resistant superbug dubbed an \u201curgent\u201d threat by health officials has spread across nearly two dozen US states \u2014 and its highly generic symptoms make it difficult to spot.<\/p>\n<p>The deadly fungus, known as <a href=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/2026\/03\/17\/health\/inside-new-yorks-superbug-crisis-and-the-bad-habit-thats-fueling-antibiotic-resistance\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Candida auris,<\/a> has been reported in 23 states with more than 3,000 cases so far this year,\u00a0 <a href=\"https:\/\/stacks.cdc.gov\/view\/cdc\/258302\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">according to the Centers for Disease Control<\/a> \u2014 mostly in nursing homes and hospitals.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe rapid emergence around the world and the speed of spread in the U.S. is alarming,\u201d<a href=\"https:\/\/www.faculty.uci.edu\/profile\/?facultyId=5478\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\"> <\/a>Susan Huang, a professor of infectious diseases at the University of California Irvine School of Medicine, told <a href=\"https:\/\/www.healthline.com\/health-news\/candida-auris-drug-resistant-superbug-spreading#What-you-should-know-about-Candida-auris\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Healthline.com<\/a>. <\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe public should definitely be aware of this concern and how it may impact them or those they care about.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Oliver Kurzai holds a petri dish containing the yeast candida auris in a laboratory at Wuerzburg University in Wuerzburg. picture alliance via Getty Images<\/p>\n<p>The superbug \u2014 which is estimated to have caused death in up to 60% people infected by it\u2014 is a type of yeast that enters the bloodstream and spreads throughout the body.<\/p>\n<p>It spreads via contact with infected people or by touching it on an infected surface.<\/p>\n<p>It has strains resistant to all types of medications, and has been labeled an \u201curgent antimicrobial resistance threat\u201d by the CDC.<\/p>\n<p>Symptoms depend on where the infection is located but tend to include chills, fever, fatigue \u2014 common complaints that can throw off doctors.<\/p>\n<p>Other symptoms include low body temperature and high heart rate, according to the <a href=\"https:\/\/my.clevelandclinic.org\/health\/diseases\/25152-candida-auris\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">Cleveland Clinic<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Texas has had the most cases\u00a0of the fungus this year with 706, followed by Michigan with 503, and Illinois with 366, according to the most recent available CDC data, released last month.<\/p>\n<p>Epidemic Intelligence Service officer Amy Xie uses a Glo Germ device to simulate environmental transmission of Candida auris. Gado via Getty Images<\/p>\n<p>None were reported this year in New York, but 166 cases were found in New Jersey.<\/p>\n<p>People in hospitals and other health care settings face the highest risk of becoming infected, health officials said.<\/p>\n<p>The fungus is believed to be able to survive on surfaces for weeks at a time\u00a0before spreading to people in medical facilities through IVs and breathing tubes.<\/p>\n<p>\u201c[It\u2019s] is a growing problem among chronically ill persons in nursing homes and hospitals. BSIP\/Universal Images Group via Getty Images<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIdentifying infected patients and caring for them in an isolation room is also important to curtail spread,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>Researchers have <a href=\"https:\/\/pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/articles\/PMC9344200\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">estimated<\/a> estimated that 30\u201360% of people with Candida auris illnesses have died, though many of them also had other sicknesses that increased their risk of fatality.<\/p>\n<p>People with healthy immune systems don\u2019t tend to get sick from the fungus, but can transmit it to others.
