As Yanez cautiously moved aside, the animal mirrored his movements while hiding behind nearby bushes.

After several tense moments, the mountain lion backed away slightly. ABC 10 News

Yanez then pulled out his phone and photographed the animal before it finally ran off about five minutes after the encounter began.

Mission Trails Regional Park Ranger Christian Navarro said Yanez responded exactly as hikers are advised to during a mountain lion encounter.

“Gabe sounds like he did exactly what he should have done, stood his ground,” Navarro said.

Mission Trails Regional Park Ranger Christian Navarro said Yanez responded exactly as hikers are advised to. Courtesy of Gabe Yanez

Navarro said park officials have received several mountain lion sightings in the park since late June and believe they all involve the same juvenile animal.

He noted that mountain lions are native to Mission Trails Regional Park and typically roam large territories on their own.

“We are monitoring it. We think it’s the same mountain lion. They are usually solitary animals. Their range is large,” Navarro said.

Yanez said he hopes sharing his experience encourages other visitors to stay alert while hiking. “Be aware. It can happen to you,” he warned.

Download The California Post App, follow us on social, and subscribe to our newsletters

California Post News: Facebook, Instagram, TikTok, X, YouTube, WhatsApp, LinkedIn
California Post Sports Facebook, Instagram, TikTok, YouTube, X
California Post Opinion
California Post Newsletters: Sign up here!
California Post App: Download here!
Home delivery: Sign up here!
Page Six Hollywood: Sign up here!

A California hiker endured a terrifying five-minute standoff with a mountain lion after coming face-to-face with the predator…

[23
3425,276,746,9427,9321,5248,3549,159,67,132,68,1154
post-983127","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","category-environment","tag-animals","tag-california","tag-environment","tag-hiking","tag-lions","tag-metro","tag-san-diego","tag-science","tag-united-states","tag-unitedstates","tag-us","tag-us-news
["GET
