MONTGOMERY, Ala. (WSFA<\/a>) – A raccoon found in Montgomery has tested positive for rabies, the Alabama Department of Public Health is confirming.<\/p>\n

The wild animal was captured by a wildlife pest control company on July 31 after a homeowner in the Dalraida neighborhood found it \u201cexhibiting unusual behavior\u201d near their backyard fence, ADPH officials said.<\/p>\n

The animal was trapped and sent for rabies testing.<\/p>\n

\u201cThis incident highlights the importance of the public recognizing unusual wildlife behavior and reporting it,\u201d said Dr. Dee W. Jones, State Public Health Veterinarian. \u201cThe homeowner\u2019s quick action allowed this animal to be tested promptly, reducing the risk of potential exposures.\u201d<\/p>\n

Jones reminded residents to make sure their pets are properly vaccinated against rabies, which is required under state law for dogs, cats, and ferrets older than 12 weeks.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt is not unusual to see clusters of rabies cases in wild animals and strays during this time of year,\u201d Jones noted, and that it\u2019s very common for domestic animals and pets to have contact with a wild rabid animal. <\/p>\n
