{"id":983265,"date":"2026-08-05T23:02:29","date_gmt":"2026-08-05T23:02:29","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/983265\/"},"modified":"2026-08-05T23:02:29","modified_gmt":"2026-08-05T23:02:29","slug":"canadian-prime-minister-mark-carney-loses-confidence-in-fifas-infantino","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/983265\/","title":{"rendered":"Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney loses confidence in FIFA&#8217;s Infantino"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>TORONTO (AP) \u2014 Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney said Wednesday he no longer has confidence in <a class=\"Link AnClick-LinkEnhancement\" data-gtm-enhancement-style=\"LinkEnhancementA\" href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/hub\/fifa\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">FIFA<\/a> President Gianni Infantino, adding to growing pressure on the soccer leader after his abandoned plan <a class=\"Link AnClick-LinkEnhancement\" data-gtm-enhancement-style=\"LinkEnhancementA\" href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/world-cup-infantino-fifa-investors-8aba1b529f220c27d02d326e8fd9e377\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">to sell stakes in the World Cup<\/a> sparked a global backlash. <\/p>\n<p>Carney said Infantino committed a \u201cfatal\u201d governance failure by not consulting senior advisers, including FIFA\u2019s chief operating officer and board members. <\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt should be fatal,\u201d Carney said. \u201cCertainly I don\u2019t have confidence in Mr. Infantino.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Canada co-hosted the 2026 World Cup with the United States and Mexico, and Carney appeared alongside Infantino at several tournament events.<\/p>\n<p>Carney\u2019s comments came days after Infantino abandoned the proposal following fierce opposition from the Union of European Football Associations, national soccer federations and senior FIFA advisers. <\/p>\n<p>Infantino had proposed creating a $20 billion company to run the <a class=\"Link AnClick-LinkEnhancement\" data-gtm-enhancement-style=\"LinkEnhancementA\" href=\"https:\/\/ap%20world%20cup%20coverage\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">World Cup<\/a> with private investors including the Kushner family, but drew backlash. <\/p>\n<p>British <a class=\"Link AnClick-LinkEnhancement\" data-gtm-enhancement-style=\"LinkEnhancementA\" href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/gianni-infantino-fifa-world-cup-burnham-uefa-4b6cd1451cde4f2687e119088a3c64ef\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Prime Minister Andy Burnham <\/a> last Sunday called Infantino \u201cthe wrong man to lead\u201d world soccer.<\/p>\n<p>FIFA did not immediately respond to a request for comment. <\/p>\n<p>UEFA\u2019s 55 member associations had agreed to boycott the World Cup and other FIFA competitions if the plan moved forward, while the Confederation of North, Central America and Caribbean Association Football and the Asian Football Confederation also opposed it.<\/p>\n<p>Despite Infantino\u2019s reversal, UEFA said it would work with other confederations to ensure a similar proposal \u201ccannot occur again.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>While Infantino has retained support from some member associations, including 2022 World Cup host Qatar, Carney\u2019s comments added to the growing criticism of FIFA\u2019s governance.<\/p>\n<p>FIFA\u2019s next presidential election is scheduled for March in Rabat, Morocco.
