After declining<\/a> his $27.7MM player option to give the Warriors<\/strong> a chance at landing a big-name free agent, which ultimately did not come to fruition, Draymond Green<\/a><\/strong> recently signed<\/a> a one-year deal worth the same amount.<\/p>\n

Green was eligible to receive a no-trade clause in this deal, as the rule<\/a> stipulates a player must have spent at least four years with their current team, be signing a new deal rather than an extension, and have at least eight seasons of experience, but no such provision was forthcoming from Golden State.<\/p>\n

\"\"In addition to the no-trade clause he was eligible for, Green could also have received an implicit no-trade clause, since he was signing a one-year deal, but he waived<\/a> that right as well, instead receiving a 15 percent trade kicker, as he had in his previous deal, per ESPN\u2019s Anthony Slater (Twitter link<\/a>).<\/p>\n

He spoke about the decision on a recent episode of his podcast, explaining his mindset coming out of the negotiations.<\/p>\n

\u201cI think it was something that we could have fought over, but it wasn\u2019t worth fighting over,\u201d he said (video link<\/a>). \u201cI think if the Warriors want to trade me at some point in the season, they want to trade me. I\u2019ve never been a guy who wants to stay somewhere where I\u2019m not wanted.\u201d<\/p>\n

With limited assets at the team\u2019s disposal, Green\u2019s name occasionally appeared in trade rumors<\/a> this season, which is something of a rare occurrence throughout his tenure with the Warriors. He was open about the business angle of such possibilities throughout the process, but there has also always been reported interest<\/a> from both sides in having Green finish his career in the Bay Area.<\/p>\n

\u201cI think there is a partnership that this works for us, it works,\u201d Green said. \u201cIf it doesn\u2019t, it doesn\u2019t, you know, and I never want to be that guy anyway. So, to sit and fight over a no-trade clause, I don\u2019t think it was worth it. It\u2019s pointless. So, that wasn\u2019t a thing.\u201d<\/p>\n
