In a major step towards making mental healthcare more transparent, accountable and patient-centric, the Chandigarh Administration has notified the Chandigarh Mental Healthcare Rules, 2026, making registration of mental health establishments mandatory and providing for regular inspections and audits to safeguard patients\u2019 rights.<\/p>\n
The rules provide for the constitution of the Chandigarh State Mental Health Authority, which will oversee the registration, regulation and monitoring of mental health establishments and professionals, besides addressing complaints. The move is aimed at curbing the operation of unregistered or substandard institutions and improving the quality of mental healthcare services.<\/p>\n
Under the new framework, all private mental health establishments must obtain registration, while government-run institutions have been exempted from registration fees. A digital register of mental health establishments and professionals will also be maintained. The rules further mandate the constitution of Mental Health Review Boards comprising judicial officers, medical experts, persons with mental illness and caregivers.
