{"id":984364,"date":"2026-08-06T10:52:27","date_gmt":"2026-08-06T10:52:27","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/984364\/"},"modified":"2026-08-06T10:52:27","modified_gmt":"2026-08-06T10:52:27","slug":"nyc-to-face-lawsuits-connected-to-2025-legionnaires-outbreak-in-harlem","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/984364\/","title":{"rendered":"NYC to face lawsuits connected to 2025 Legionnaires&#8217; outbreak in Harlem"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Several lawsuits are expected to be announced Thursday against New York City and others connected to a deadly <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbsnews.com\/newyork\/news\/legionnaires-disease-nyc-harlem-outbreak\/\" target=\"_blank\" data-invalid-url-rewritten-http=\"\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Legionnaires&#8217; outbreak<\/a>\u00a0in Harlem.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Families affected by the 2025 outbreak are expected to stand alongside attorney Ben Crump and the Rev. Al Sharpton to announce four lawsuits.<\/p>\n<p>They will target the city, NYC Health + Hospitals and contractors responsible for maintaining cooling towers. They claim cooling towers connected to the outbreak weren&#8217;t properly tested, treated or maintained, and people weren&#8217;t warned quickly enough about the danger.<\/p>\n<p>The outbreak lasted several weeks before health officials declared it over. In total, 118 people became sick and seven died.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Investigators linked the outbreak to 12 cooling towers across Central Harlem, including towers at Harlem Hospital and the city&#8217;s Public Health Laboratory.<\/p>\n<p>CBS News New York has reached out to city officials for comment and is waiting to hear back.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>This comes as health officials recently announced there is no longer an elevated <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbsnews.com\/newyork\/news\/legionnaires-disease-nyc-upper-east-side-exposure-ended\/\" target=\"_blank\" data-invalid-url-rewritten-http=\"\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">risk of exposure<\/a>\u00a0to Legionnaires&#8217; disease on the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbsnews.com\/newyork\/news\/legionnaires-outbreak-east-village-rally-upper-east-side-death\/\" target=\"_blank\" data-invalid-url-rewritten-http=\"\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Upper East Side<\/a>. Seven people died, and 92 people tested positive in connection to the cluster.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>A <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbsnews.com\/newyork\/news\/legionnaires-disease-death-lawsuit\/\" target=\"_blank\" data-invalid-url-rewritten-http=\"\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">widow<\/a> of one of the victims said she plans to file a lawsuit after health officials determine the source of the outbreak.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;The intended action will target the owner of an Upper East Side building who failed to properly maintain its rooftop cooling tower,&#8221; her attorney said. \u00a0<\/p>\n<p>New York\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbsnews.com\/newyork\/news\/nyc-cooling-tower-inspections-legislation\/\" target=\"_blank\" data-invalid-url-rewritten-http=\"\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Gov. Kathy Hochul<\/a> signed legislation aimed at strengthening inspection requirements for cooling towers. The law, signed Wednesday, requires twice-yearly certifications, faster remediation and stiffer penalties for violations.
