Those ranges include Tropical Storms <a data-omtr-intcmp=\"fxw_weather-news_article_main-content_article-body_2_9\" href=\"https:\/\/www.foxweather.com\/weather-news\/tropical-storm-arthur-2026-atlantic-hurricane-season-damaging-winds-heavy-rain-gulf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">Arthur<\/a> and <a data-omtr-intcmp=\"fxw_weather-news_article_main-content_article-body_2_10\" href=\"https:\/\/www.foxweather.com\/weather-news\/tropical-storm-bertha-gulf-coast-louisiana\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">Bertha<\/a>, which formed in the Gulf earlier this <a data-omtr-intcmp=\"fxw_weather-news_article_main-content_article-body_2_11\" href=\"https:\/\/www.foxweather.com\/category\/summer\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">summer<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p data-v-438398f6=\"\">This is a slight reduction from NOAA&#8217;s initial forecast that was issued in late May, which called for a below-average season with 8 to 14 named storms, 3 to 6 hurricanes, including 1 to 3 major hurricanes.<\/p>\n<p data-v-438398f6=\"\"><a data-omtr-intcmp=\"fxw_weather-news_article_main-content_article-body_2_12\" href=\"https:\/\/www.foxweather.com\/learn\/saffir-simpson-hurricane-wind-scale-hurricane-ratings\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\"><strong>HOW ARE HURRICANES RATED?<\/strong><\/a><\/p>\n<p data-v-438398f6=\"\">In comparison, an average Atlantic hurricane season produces 14 named storms, including 7 hurricanes and 3 major hurricanes.<\/p>\n<p> <img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"668\" height=\"376\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/2026-noaa-august-forecast-compare.png\" alt=\"NOAA's Atlantic Hurricane Season Forecast August Update\"\/> <\/p>\n<p class=\"title\">NOAA&#8217;s Atlantic Hurricane Season Forecast August Update<\/p>\n<p class=\"sub-text\"><strong> (FOX Weather)<\/strong><\/p>\n<p data-v-438398f6=\"\">NOAA also raised the probability of a below-average season from 55% to 75%.<\/p>\n<p data-v-438398f6=\"\">&#8220;If the 2026 Atlantic hurricane season ends up being below-normal, it would mark only the second season in the last decade without above-normal activity,&#8221; NOAA said.<\/p>\n<p data-v-438398f6=\"\">El Ni\u00f1o generally suppresses Atlantic hurricane activity.<\/p>\n<p data-v-438398f6=\"\">El Ni\u00f1o is one of three phases of a climate cycle called the <a data-omtr-intcmp=\"fxw_weather-news_article_main-content_article-body_2_13\" href=\"https:\/\/www.climate.gov\/news-features\/blogs\/enso\/what-el-ni%C3%B1o%E2%80%93southern-oscillation-enso-nutshell#&amp;_intcmp=fxw_learn_article_main-content_article-body_2_2\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\">El Ni\u00f1o-Southern Oscillation (ENSO)<\/a>. It&#8217;s typically more robust and extends well into the Caribbean and Atlantic Ocean. Calm conditions are generally more conducive to hurricane formation.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p data-v-438398f6=\"\">When water temperatures in the El Ni\u00f1o zone reach at least 2 degrees Celsius above average for at least three consecutive months, it is considered a <a data-omtr-intcmp=\"fxw_weather-news_article_main-content_article-body_2_22\" href=\"https:\/\/www.foxweather.com\/learn\/super-el-nino\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">Super El Ni\u00f1o<\/a>. These events are not as common as a typical El Ni\u00f1o and have a massive influence not only on the Atlantic hurricane season, but also other weather patterns around the globe.<\/p>\n<p data-v-438398f6=\"\"><a data-omtr-intcmp=\"fxw_weather-news_article_main-content_article-body_2_23\" href=\"https:\/\/www.foxweather.com\/learn\/super-el-nino\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\"><strong>WHAT IS A SUPER EL NINO?<\/strong><\/a><\/p>\n<p data-v-438398f6=\"\">Taken in a vacuum, the stronger the El Ni\u00f1o event, the more wind will be present to limit storm development in the Atlantic.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" width=\"100%\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/ENSO 3.4 SST - Comparing Super El Nino - Right Now.png\"\/>Super El Ni\u00f1o comparison<br \/><strong>(FOX Weather)<\/strong><br \/>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p data-v-438398f6=\"\">A strong El Ni\u00f1o has already taken hold, with water temperatures in the El Ni\u00f1o zone now 2.07 degrees above average, higher than the same point for other recent Super El Ni\u00f1o events of 2015, 1997, 1991, and 1982.<\/p>\n<p data-v-438398f6=\"\">According to NOAA, some computer forecast models suggest this El Ni\u00f1o could be the strongest event since record keeping began in 1950.
