Lake Mead\u2019s vanishing waters are exposing a long-hidden mountain landscape \u2014\u00a0as the infamous reservoir creeps within inches of an ominous new record.<\/p>\n

Getty Images<\/p>\n And the lake could sink another 16 feet or more before the end of the year, Southern Nevada Water Authority outreach manager Bronson Mack previously told KVVU-TV<\/a>.<\/p>\n The disappearing water has revealed grisly secrets before.<\/p>\n In 2022, human remains began surfacing as Lake Mead plunged to record lows, including the body of a man who authorities said had been fatally shot decades earlier and stuffed inside a barrel \u2014\u00a0prompting speculation about a possible mob hit<\/a>.<\/p>\n \u201cIt\u2019s flooded mountain range, so it does have some of those hazards that are below the shore,\u201d Lake Mead National Recreation Area Chief Ranger Mike Garel told the TV station<\/a>. \u201cObstacles are not just close to shore.\u201d<\/p>\n And the lake could sink another 16 feet or more before the end of the year, Getty Images<\/p>\n An aerial view shows Hemenway Harbor and Lake Mead Marina in Nevada. The man-made lake provides many types of recreation to locals and visitors, including boating, fishing, swimming, and water skiing.
