A U.S. Marine recruit died after suffering a medical emergency during a physical fitness test at USMC Base Camp Pendleton, the military announced Thursday. <\/p>\n
The recruit, who was not identified pending family notification, suffered some type of health issue last Saturday and died at Tri-City Medical Center in Oceanside on Wednesday, the U.S. Marine Corps Recruiting Depot said. <\/p>\n
Specifics on the activity the recruit was participating in or the type of medical emergency suffered were not disclosed. <\/p>\n
“The matter is currently under investigation, and officials are conducting a medical review, both in accordance with standard procedure,” a statement from the MCRD said. <\/p>\n
Recruits go through four phases of training over 13 weeks, which culminate in a 54-hour final test. According to the USMC training website, during the test, recruits “face food and sleep deprivation, complete 45 miles of marching, and tackle a series of physical and mental challenges. It’s the ultimate test of what they’ve learned\u2014and it’s where they earn the title United States Marine.”<\/p>\n
