{"id":986613,"date":"2026-08-07T11:13:26","date_gmt":"2026-08-07T11:13:26","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/986613\/"},"modified":"2026-08-07T11:13:26","modified_gmt":"2026-08-07T11:13:26","slug":"asia-needs-deeper-energy-markets-if-its-going-to-achieve-its-ai-ambitions","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/986613\/","title":{"rendered":"Asia needs deeper energy markets if it&#8217;s going to achieve its AI ambitions"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Asia\u2019s energy security depends on the Strait of Hormuz, a waterway it doesn\u2019t control, and the fallout from the return of conflict would extend well past fuel pumps.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">If Asia doesn\u2019t build deeper, more liquid electricity networks now, it risks losing its slice of the AI value chain. Nearly every major Asian economy now has a formal national AI masterplan. Japan recently announced a <a aria-label=\"Go to https:\/\/www.japantimes.co.jp\/business\/2026\/06\/24\/economy\/investment-plan-unveiled-14-years\/\" href=\"https:\/\/www.japantimes.co.jp\/business\/2026\/06\/24\/economy\/investment-plan-unveiled-14-years\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">370 trillion yen ($2.3 trillion) budget<\/a>, with more than a quarter of that sum earmarked for spending on artificial intelligence and chips alone over the next 15 years.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Training a frontier AI model <a aria-label=\"Go to https:\/\/epoch.ai\/publications\/power-demands-of-frontier-ai-training\" href=\"https:\/\/epoch.ai\/publications\/power-demands-of-frontier-ai-training\" data-type=\"link\" data-id=\"https:\/\/epoch.ai\/publications\/power-demands-of-frontier-ai-training\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">concentrates enormous computing power into <\/a>a handful of locations, while inferencing pushes low-latency facilities into dense urban hubs. Data center power demand across Asia-Pacific is expected to <a aria-label=\"Go to https:\/\/arc-group.com\/southeast-asia-data-centre-ma-2026\/\" href=\"https:\/\/arc-group.com\/southeast-asia-data-centre-ma-2026\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">increase by an estimated 165%<\/a> in 2023-30.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Much of the region\u2019s headline megawatt figures, though, are \u201cbragawatts\u201d\u2014announcements that look impressive on paper but are far slower to turn into real energy.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Why? Despite the rapid progress in developing renewable energy generation, reliable systems require major grid upgrades. Renewables are typically built far from demand centers and generate power intermittently. Without new transmission and storage, server racks will therefore struggle to operate at full capacity. According to the International Energy Agency\u2019s Southeast Asia Outlook, <a aria-label=\"Go to https:\/\/www.iea.org\/reports\/southeast-asia-energy-outlook-2026\/executive-summary\" href=\"https:\/\/www.iea.org\/reports\/southeast-asia-energy-outlook-2026\/executive-summary\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">grid and storage investment in 2025 was just $13 billion<\/a>, far lower than the $50 billion needed annually till 2050.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Also, in an era of higher fuel prices and energy insecurity, other priorities may supersede electricity supply for data centers. Politicians and policymakers want to keep the lights and the air-conditioning on, after all.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The U.S. is a cautionary tale. Up to half of all planned U.S. projects <a aria-label=\"Go to https:\/\/www.currence.ai\/blog\/data-center-outlook\" href=\"https:\/\/www.currence.ai\/blog\/data-center-outlook\" data-type=\"link\" data-id=\"https:\/\/www.currence.ai\/blog\/data-center-outlook\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">may not come online<\/a> this year. In the first three months of the year, 75 data center projects worth a combined $130 billion were <a aria-label=\"Go to https:\/\/www.datacenterwatch.org\/q1-2026\" href=\"https:\/\/www.datacenterwatch.org\/q1-2026\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">blocked or delayed by local opposition<\/a>, matching the total number blocked in all of 2025.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Asia is already living a version of this. The region delivered only about 38% of its announced data center capacity in 2024, one of the widest plan-to-delivery gaps of any market globally, according to our white paper with Oxford\u2019s Smith School. The problem is particularly acute in Malaysia and India, the two countries banking on a digital infrastructure boom.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Johor has <a aria-label=\"Go to https:\/\/www.bloomberg.com\/news\/articles\/2025-11-26\/malaysia-s-data-center-hub-tightens-approvals-on-water-worries\" href=\"https:\/\/www.bloomberg.com\/news\/articles\/2025-11-26\/malaysia-s-data-center-hub-tightens-approvals-on-water-worries\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">banned the construction of Tier 1 and 2 facilities<\/a> due to concerns over the strain on local water infrastructure, while India\u2019s hopes to double projected capacity by the end of the next financial year will have to contend with severe <a aria-label=\"Go to https:\/\/energetica-india.net\/news\/indias-ai-data-centre-boom-set-to-add-263-gw-load-raising-grid-stability-concerns\" href=\"https:\/\/energetica-india.net\/news\/indias-ai-data-centre-boom-set-to-add-263-gw-load-raising-grid-stability-concerns\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">grid delivery lags<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">With AI-driven euphoria flooding the markets, the gap between what\u2019s promised and what\u2019s feasible is only going to widen.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Commodity markets are already pricing the announced build-out rather than what\u2019s executable. Copper prices have stayed high on assumptions of surging data center construction demand, and transformer costs are running at <a aria-label=\"Go to https:\/\/www.powermag.com\/transformers-in-2026-shortage-scramble-or-self-inflicted-crisis\/\" href=\"https:\/\/www.powermag.com\/transformers-in-2026-shortage-scramble-or-self-inflicted-crisis\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">two to three times pre-2020 levels<\/a> as developers lock in scarce equipment.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">If interconnection queues stretch the way they have in the U.S. and Europe, the mismatch between announced and delivered capacity could produce the kind of boom-bust cycle that metals markets saw in the last decade.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Singapore, Malaysia, and South Korea are <a aria-label=\"Go to https:\/\/www.woodmac.com\/press-releases\/apac-data-centre-stress-on-grids-2026\/\" href=\"https:\/\/www.woodmac.com\/press-releases\/apac-data-centre-stress-on-grids-2026\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">responding with regulatory frameworks<\/a> that require data center developers to draw up plans for battery storage and curtailment management alongside grid-impact assessments.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">That means Asia\u2019s AI build-out may slow down, even as the U.S. presses ahead with a further <a aria-label=\"Go to https:\/\/www.semiconductors.org\/new-report-finds-semiconductors-account-for-95-of-an-ai-data-server-racks-value-encompassing-the-full-stack-of-chip-technologies\/\" href=\"https:\/\/www.semiconductors.org\/new-report-finds-semiconductors-account-for-95-of-an-ai-data-server-racks-value-encompassing-the-full-stack-of-chip-technologies\/\" data-type=\"link\" data-id=\"https:\/\/www.semiconductors.org\/new-report-finds-semiconductors-account-for-95-of-an-ai-data-server-racks-value-encompassing-the-full-stack-of-chip-technologies\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">$4 trillion in data center construction<\/a> planned through 2028. Every quarter that Asian operators wait is another quarter of compute, talent, and capital that could end up being deployed elsewhere.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A more liberal approach to distributed energy generation and electricity trading\u2014essentially opening wholesale electricity markets to price competition\u2014will help attract more investment and ease the region\u2019s dependence on imported oil and gas. Getting there, however, requires deeper, more transparent energy markets.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The region\u2019s electricity markets currently do not give investors the transparency they need.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Most Asian electricity systems still rely on a traditional ecosystem: vertically integrated, state-owned utilities acting as single buyers, with retail tariffs set administratively and limited trading allowed for third parties that can generate the future pricing signals needed through forward contracts. Investors in mature markets like Europe and the U.S., on the other hand, take such trading layers for granted.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Renewable energy investors in Asia are left with less certainty over long-dated returns, which are more exposed to government intervention during demand surges. This increases the risk that grid projects stall for lack of investment \u2014 the same grid that Asia\u2019s data centers are waiting to connect to.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Some of the work to liberalize electricity markets is under way. Japan\u2019s power futures market, for example, is the <a aria-label=\"Go to https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/business\/energy\/japan-power-futures-poised-expansion-new-rules-spur-hedging-2025-10-21\/\" href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/business\/energy\/japan-power-futures-poised-expansion-new-rules-spur-hedging-2025-10-21\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">fastest-growing electricity derivatives market globally<\/a>. India\u2019s power exchange <a aria-label=\"Go to https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/sustainability\/boards-policy-regulation\/india-start-market-coupling-power-exchanges-january-2025-07-23\/\" href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/sustainability\/boards-policy-regulation\/india-start-market-coupling-power-exchanges-january-2025-07-23\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">IEX now runs day-ahead and term-ahead markets<\/a>. Meanwhile, electricity has been flowing and traded commercially from <a aria-label=\"Go to https:\/\/www.ema.gov.sg\/news-events\/news\/media-releases\/2022\/singapore-commences-first-renewable-energy-electricity-import-via-regional-multilateral-power-trade\" href=\"https:\/\/www.ema.gov.sg\/news-events\/news\/media-releases\/2022\/singapore-commences-first-renewable-energy-electricity-import-via-regional-multilateral-power-trade\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Laos through Thailand and Malaysia to Singapore<\/a> since 2022.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Marex, where I work, has been contributing to growing liquidity in Japan\u2019s power derivatives markets. In New Zealand, Marex was recently selected to provide an over-the-counter (OTC) trading platform supporting the country\u2019s standardized super-peak electricity contract \u2014 deepening a local market that, like many across Asia, has traditionally been fragmented and thinly traded.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">These steps point to what deeper Asian power markets could look like: instruments and platforms that let generators, industrial users and investors hedge and price electricity with the same confidence they bring to other commodities.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Electricity in Asia needs to trade with the same rigor as crude oil does in the global market.
