Filmmaker Guillermo del Toro and screenwriter-director Aaron Sorkin will receive honorary doctorates Friday from the American Film Institute during the AFI Conservatory commencement ceremony in Hollywood.<\/p>\n
The American Film Institute said it will confer Doctor of Fine Arts degrees honoris causa on the two entertainment figures in recognition of their contributions to the art of the moving image.<\/p>\n
The awards will be presented during a private commencement ceremony for the AFI Conservatory Class of 2026 on Friday at the TCL Chinese Theatre, according to organizers.<\/p>\n
\u201cGuillermo del Toro and Aaron Sorkin are peerless, prolific creative forces at a time the world needs them most,\u201d AFI President and CEO Bob Gazzale said in an earlier statement. \u201cFrom the vast nature of dreams to an incisive line of dialogue, their contributions to the art form have inspired audiences around the world \u2014 as they will inspire this year\u2019s graduates of the AFI Conservatory.\u201d<\/p>\n
Del Toro is an eight-time Oscar nominee who won two for directing and producing the 2017 film \u201cThe Shape of Water\u201d and Best Animated Feature Film for 2022\u2019s \u201cGuillermo del Toro\u2019s Pinocchio.\u201d<\/p>\n
His other credits include \u201cCronos,\u201d \u201cPan\u2019s Labyrinth,\u201d the 2025 version of \u201cFrankenstein\u201d and \u201cHellboy.\u201d<\/p>\n
Sorkin won an Academy Award for writing 2010\u2019s \u201cThe Social Network\u201d and also penned \u201cA Few Good Men,\u201d \u201cMoneyball,\u201d \u201cSteve Jobs\u201d and \u201cCharlie Wilson\u2019s War.\u201d His television credits include \u201cThe West Wing,\u201d \u201cSports Night,\u201d \u201cStudio 60 on the Sunset Strip\u201d and \u201cThe Newsroom.\u201d<\/p>\n
The pair join previous AFI honorary degree recipients including Robert Altman, Maya Angelou, Angela Bassett, Mel Brooks, Viola Davis, Clint Eastwood, Spike Lee, Helen Mirren, Rita Moreno, Quentin Tarantino and Michelle Yeoh.<\/p>\n
