Education advocacy organization EdTrust-New York is sounding the alarm over a decline in grades 3-8 English Language Arts assessment results as compared to last year and what it describes as dramatic shifts in student performance after an increase in scores last year.<\/p>\n
The organization is raising questions over the shifts, why discrepancies exist between district data and state outcomes in New York City and what that means when it comes to standardized testing in New York state.<\/p>\n
Deputy Director of EdTrust-New York Jeff Smink joined Capital Tonight to discuss the organization\u2019s call for the state Education Department to conduct an independent audit that would study the structure and administration of the ELA assessment over three years, and how the state can address shortfalls in student performance.<\/p>\n
The state Education Department told Spectrum News 1 that it already conducts two independent audits per year of the state\u2019s assessments that show no issues, though EdTrust is looking to examine trends and variations over time.<\/p>\n
