{"id":988784,"date":"2026-08-08T10:48:26","date_gmt":"2026-08-08T10:48:26","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/988784\/"},"modified":"2026-08-08T10:48:26","modified_gmt":"2026-08-08T10:48:26","slug":"cbs-austin-kris-6-krbe-among-texas-tv-radio-layoffs","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/988784\/","title":{"rendered":"CBS Austin, KRIS 6, KRBE among Texas TV, radio layoffs"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><img alt=\"CBS Austin morning anchor John-Carlos Estrada was among the Texas broadcasters laid off this week.\u00a0\" loading=\"eager\" fetchpriority=\"high\"   style=\"aspect-ratio:3 \/ 2\" class=\"x100 y100 opc bgpc ofcv bgscv block bg-gray200 mnh0px fill\"\/><\/p>\n<p>CBS Austin morning anchor John-Carlos Estrada was among the Texas broadcasters laid off this week.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>CBS Austin<\/p>\n<p>It&#8217;s been a brutal week for <a href=\"https:\/\/www.chron.com\/news\/houston-texas\/article\/kprc-daniella-guzman-tickets-22376789.php\" data-link=\"native\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"\">Texas media<\/a>, with <a href=\"https:\/\/www.chron.com\/news\/houston-texas\/article\/fox-26-anthony-antoine-blooper-22377083.php\" data-link=\"native\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"\">television stations<\/a> and radio companies eliminating jobs from Austin to Corpus Christi, Waco, Houston and Amarillo as broadcasters continue reshaping their operations.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/cdn-channels-pixel.ex.co\/events\/0012000001fxZm9AAE?integrationType=DEFAULT&amp;template=design%2Farticle%2Fplatypus_two_column.tpl\" alt=\"\" class=\"x1px y1px vh abs\" aria-hidden=\"true\" width=\"1\" height=\"1\"\/><\/p>\n<p>The latest round reached Austin on Thursday, when <a href=\"https:\/\/www.chron.com\/news\/houston-texas\/article\/cbs-austin-layoffs-estrada-wilson-22377243.php\" data-link=\"native\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"\">CBS Austin laid off<\/a> morning anchor John-Carlos\u00a0Estrada and traffic anchor Jenna Wilson.<\/p>\n<p class=\"uiTextSmall f aic jcc\">Article continues below this ad<\/p>\n<p>Estrada confirmed his departure in a social media post Friday morning.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;After 7 years of overnight alarms, I finally get to sleep in. My time on CBS Austin This Morning has come to an end,&#8221; he wrote.<\/p>\n<p>Estrada thanked viewers for welcoming him into their homes each morning and expressed gratitude for the story tips, interviews and encouragement he received during his seven years at the station. He said he plans to finish an upcoming book with the University of Texas Press and continue his documentary work.<\/p>\n<p class=\"uiTextSmall f aic jcc\">Article continues below this ad<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Austin is home, so you&#8217;ll still see us around town with the Frenchies!&#8221; he added.<\/p>\n<p>In a statement to\u00a0Chron, CBS Austin News Director Erin Garza confirmed the layoffs and said the station will debut a refreshed format for CBS Austin This Morning on Sept. 14.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Beginning September 14, CBS Austin will debut a refreshed format for &#8216;CBS Austin This Morning,&#8217; designed to better serve our audience while continuing to deliver the local journalism and community coverage our viewers expect,&#8221; Garza said. She said the transition required &#8220;the difficult decision to eliminate two positions&#8221; and thanked Estrada and Wilson for their contributions to the station.<\/p>\n<p class=\"uiTextSmall f aic jcc\">Article continues below this ad<\/p>\n<p>Scripps layoffs hit Texas TV stations<\/p>\n<p>The Austin cuts came just days after\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.chron.com\/news\/houston-texas\/article\/scripps-layoffs-texas-tv-22373690.php\" data-link=\"native\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"\">E.W. Scripps eliminated jobs at television stations<\/a> across the country, including in Texas.<\/p>\n<p>The company has not disclosed how many employees were affected at individual stations, but layoffs reached <a href=\"https:\/\/www.chron.com\/news\/houston-texas\/article\/keith-garvin-daughter-raegan-kris6-22334705.php\" data-link=\"native\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"\">KRIS 6 in Corpus Christi<\/a> and\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.chron.com\/news\/houston-texas\/article\/erin-heft-wfaa-22359007.php\" data-link=\"native\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"\">KXXV in Waco<\/a> as part of a nationwide workforce reduction tied to broader operational changes. Reports have alleged more than two dozen employees were laid off at KRIS 6, though the station has not confirmed that figure.<\/p>\n<p>Several employees shared emotional messages in the aftermath.<\/p>\n<p class=\"uiTextSmall f aic jcc\">Article continues below this ad<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.chron.com\/news\/houston-texas\/article\/scripps-layoffs-kris6-reaction-22375745.php\" data-link=\"native\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"\">KRIS 6 anchor Clara\u00a0Benitez-Cortez<\/a> asked viewers to &#8220;please pray&#8221; for the newsroom, saying many of her colleagues had lost their jobs. Dickerson joined KRBE as a weekend personality in 2021 before becoming the station&#8217;s music director the following year. In January 2025, she relocated to Atlanta after being promoted to assistant program director and midday host at sister station Q99.7 while continuing to serve as KRBE&#8217;s music director and host of\u00a0H-Town Nights With Laura.<\/p>\n<p>The cuts also reached Cumulus&#8217; Amarillo cluster, where several longtime employees were let go.
