{"id":989233,"date":"2026-08-08T15:49:13","date_gmt":"2026-08-08T15:49:13","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/989233\/"},"modified":"2026-08-08T15:49:13","modified_gmt":"2026-08-08T15:49:13","slug":"a-new-mural-on-bellaire-boulevard-is-meant-to-feel-like-a-seat-at-the-table-for-everyone-in-houston","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/989233\/","title":{"rendered":"A new mural on Bellaire Boulevard is meant to feel like a seat at the table for everyone in Houston"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"Box-_wrDxHtU__Box-sc-10sa3ie-0 Text-nO2aZ44r__TextBase-sc-s2hv5x-0 jJNfBD fSvavs article-text\"><strong>HOUSTON<\/strong> \u2013 A colorful new mural now anchors a busy stretch of Bellaire Boulevard in Southwest Houston, created through a three-week collaboration between six visiting artists from Taiwan and Houston street-art pioneer GONZO247.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Box-_wrDxHtU__Box-sc-10sa3ie-0 Text-nO2aZ44r__TextBase-sc-s2hv5x-0 jJNfBD fSvavs article-text\">\u201cI don\u2019t think I could have asked for a better birthday gift than the completion of this mural with these six amazing artists from Taiwan,\u201d GONZO247 said at the Friday unveiling.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Box-_wrDxHtU__Box-sc-10sa3ie-0 Text-nO2aZ44r__TextBase-sc-s2hv5x-0 jJNfBD fSvavs article-text\">The finished work sits at 9750 Bellaire Boulevard next to Trung Nguyen E-Coffee, in the Southwest Management District\u2014a location speakers repeatedly described as a natural home for a project built around cultural exchange.<\/p>\n<ul class=\"Box-_wrDxHtU__Box-sc-10sa3ie-0 etvbxt font_openSans articleList\">\n<li class=\"Box-_wrDxHtU__Box-sc-10sa3ie-0 Stack-vJ7SwH7U__StackBase-sc-1m5bkhd-0 evEXvX dsnUCb\"\/><\/ul>\n<p class=\"Box-_wrDxHtU__Box-sc-10sa3ie-0 Text-nO2aZ44r__TextBase-sc-s2hv5x-0 jJNfBD fSvavs article-text\">\u201cHouston is one of the most diverse cities in America, and the Southwest Management District is truly a reflection of that diversity,\u201d said Stephen Le with the Southwest Management District and Greatland Living. \u201cPeople from different countries, cultures, and backgrounds work and build our lives here.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u2018Strangers\u2019 who arrived together, built something together<\/p>\n<p class=\"Box-_wrDxHtU__Box-sc-10sa3ie-0 Text-nO2aZ44r__TextBase-sc-s2hv5x-0 jJNfBD fSvavs article-text\">GONZO247 said the artists\u2014many on their first trip to the United States\u2014didn\u2019t even know each other before arriving.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Box-_wrDxHtU__Box-sc-10sa3ie-0 Text-nO2aZ44r__TextBase-sc-s2hv5x-0 jJNfBD fSvavs article-text\">\u201cThey all came to Houston for the very first time\u2014strangers, they didn\u2019t even know each other,\u201d he said. \u201cThey all met here in Houston, I met them, we all met at the same time.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>GONZO247 speaking on camera in front of the mural, wearing a colorful cowboy hat. (Copyright 2026 by KPRC Click2Houston &#8211; All rights reserved.)<\/p>\n<p class=\"Box-_wrDxHtU__Box-sc-10sa3ie-0 Text-nO2aZ44r__TextBase-sc-s2hv5x-0 jJNfBD fSvavs article-text\">He described the program as a crash course that mixed creative mentorship with the realities of sustaining an art career. \u201cCarolyn, my partner, was showing them the business side of the arts, and I was mentoring them on the practical side of the art,\u201d he said, calling it \u201ca three-week deep dive mentorship program.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"Box-_wrDxHtU__Box-sc-10sa3ie-0 Text-nO2aZ44r__TextBase-sc-s2hv5x-0 jJNfBD fSvavs article-text\">Taiwanese artist Hsin Hwang said the experience pushed her into new techniques and new ways of working.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Box-_wrDxHtU__Box-sc-10sa3ie-0 Text-nO2aZ44r__TextBase-sc-s2hv5x-0 jJNfBD fSvavs article-text\">\u201cI learned collaboration with other people, and I learned how to use spray paint,\u201d she said. \u201cIt\u2019s my first time to use paint.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>A circular table, a shared meal, and an open chair<\/p>\n<p class=\"Box-_wrDxHtU__Box-sc-10sa3ie-0 Text-nO2aZ44r__TextBase-sc-s2hv5x-0 jJNfBD fSvavs article-text\">The mural\u2019s central image is a circular feast table, chosen intentionally, GONZO247 said, because it reflects a familiar gathering style across Asia and a sense of wholeness.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Box-_wrDxHtU__Box-sc-10sa3ie-0 Text-nO2aZ44r__TextBase-sc-s2hv5x-0 jJNfBD fSvavs article-text\">\u201cEveryone wanted to choose a circular table because that type of table is very common, and it\u2019s really what you\u2019ll see in Asia around many tables. The circle is a completion. It\u2019s everything coming together,\u201d he said. \u201cEveryone\u2019s coming and they\u2019re all bringing something special to share.\u201d<\/p>\n<ul class=\"Box-_wrDxHtU__Box-sc-10sa3ie-0 etvbxt font_openSans articleList\">\n<li class=\"Box-_wrDxHtU__Box-sc-10sa3ie-0 Stack-vJ7SwH7U__StackBase-sc-1m5bkhd-0 evEXvX dsnUCb\"\/><\/ul>\n<p class=\"Box-_wrDxHtU__Box-sc-10sa3ie-0 Text-nO2aZ44r__TextBase-sc-s2hv5x-0 jJNfBD fSvavs article-text\">To build the scene, each artist created a character\u2014an \u201cavatar\u201d\u2014meant to represent how they would show up in a shared community space. \u201cWhat better way to show diversity, inclusivity, by having each person design their own avatar character,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Box-_wrDxHtU__Box-sc-10sa3ie-0 Text-nO2aZ44r__TextBase-sc-s2hv5x-0 jJNfBD fSvavs article-text\">At the center is a detail the artists described as the emotional core: an open seat.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Box-_wrDxHtU__Box-sc-10sa3ie-0 Text-nO2aZ44r__TextBase-sc-s2hv5x-0 jJNfBD fSvavs article-text\">\u201cIn the center, we have an open seat,\u201d GONZO247 said. \u201cPartly as a pay of respect to all of our ancestors and family members who have passed away because they\u2019re always there in spirit. But also there\u2019s always a seat for everyone.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>A message about home\u2014especially now<\/p>\n<p class=\"Box-_wrDxHtU__Box-sc-10sa3ie-0 Text-nO2aZ44r__TextBase-sc-s2hv5x-0 jJNfBD fSvavs article-text\">Speakers at the gathering framed the mural not only as art, but as a statement about identity and belonging in Houston.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Box-_wrDxHtU__Box-sc-10sa3ie-0 Text-nO2aZ44r__TextBase-sc-s2hv5x-0 jJNfBD fSvavs article-text\">\u201cWe are here to share our culture, our food, our love with everyone. Everyone is welcome,\u201d said state Rep. Gigi Lee, Chief of International Affairs for the Houston Mayor\u2019s Office, told the crowd, \u201cNow today we\u2019re celebrating more than the unveiling of a mural. We are celebrating friendship, cultural exchange, and the spirit that makes Houston.\u201d<\/p>\n<ul class=\"Box-_wrDxHtU__Box-sc-10sa3ie-0 etvbxt font_openSans articleList\">\n<li class=\"Box-_wrDxHtU__Box-sc-10sa3ie-0 Stack-vJ7SwH7U__StackBase-sc-1m5bkhd-0 evEXvX dsnUCb\"\/><\/ul>\n<p class=\"Box-_wrDxHtU__Box-sc-10sa3ie-0 Text-nO2aZ44r__TextBase-sc-s2hv5x-0 jJNfBD fSvavs article-text\">A proclamation read during the event declared Aug. 7, 2026 as \u201cPainted Bridges Houston Mural Program Day\u201d in Harris County.<\/p>\n<p>Why the location matters<\/p>\n<p class=\"Box-_wrDxHtU__Box-sc-10sa3ie-0 Text-nO2aZ44r__TextBase-sc-s2hv5x-0 jJNfBD fSvavs article-text\">The mural\u2019s placement along Bellaire\u2014an area known for global food, immigrant-owned businesses and everyday multilingual life\u2014was repeatedly credited as part of its meaning.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Box-_wrDxHtU__Box-sc-10sa3ie-0 Text-nO2aZ44r__TextBase-sc-s2hv5x-0 jJNfBD fSvavs article-text\">\u201cWe are very proud to welcome this beautiful mural to our community,\u201d one representative said. \u201cBut what makes this project so special is not what you see on this wall, but the people and the collaboration behind it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Hsin smiling in a close-up interview shot, with the mural\u2019s banquet-table imagery behind her.
