{"id":989523,"date":"2026-08-08T19:03:14","date_gmt":"2026-08-08T19:03:14","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/989523\/"},"modified":"2026-08-08T19:03:14","modified_gmt":"2026-08-08T19:03:14","slug":"central-notes-hughes-makar-snuggerud-pro-hockey-rumors","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/989523\/","title":{"rendered":"Central Notes: Hughes, Makar, Snuggerud \u2013 Pro Hockey Rumors"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Wild defenseman <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/h\/hughequ01.html?utm_medium=linker&amp;utm_source=www.prohockeyrumors.com&amp;utm_campaign=2026-08-08_hr\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Quinn Hughes<\/a><\/strong> became eligible to sign a contract extension back on July 1st.\u00a0 While a long-term agreement seemed unlikely, there was an expectation that a short-term pact could be worked out, perhaps lining his next contract timeline up with his brother <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/search\/search.fcgi?pid=hugheja03,hugheja02&amp;search=Jack+Hughes&amp;utm_medium=linker&amp;utm_source=www.prohockeyrumors.com&amp;utm_campaign=2026-08-08_hr\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Jack Hughes<\/a><\/strong>.\u00a0 However, nothing has been done just yet.\u00a0 In a recent appearance on SKOR North (<a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=CyFluEfG7Jk\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">video link<\/a>), GM Bill Guerin provided a brief note on the state of discussions:<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019ve been talking to Quinn and his camp all along. Like I said last year with Kirill, these things take time. They\u2019re big decisions for players. They\u2019re big decisions for teams. So, it\u2019s a process to work through it and this is no different than any other big contract negotiation.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>The <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/k\/kapriki01.html?utm_medium=linker&amp;utm_source=www.prohockeyrumors.com&amp;utm_campaign=2026-08-08_hr\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Kirill Kaprizov<\/a><\/strong> negotiations that Guerin referenced certainly took a lot of time.\u00a0 After some stops and starts when progress was made but then stagnated, a deal that briefly made him the highest-paid player in NHL history was completed at the end of September.\u00a0 Depending on the timing of when a potential Hughes contract gets announced, the Wild could be making him the highest-paid defender in league history.\u00a0 With that in mind, it\u2019s not entirely surprising that things aren\u2019t moving particularly quickly on that front.<\/p>\n<p>More from the Central:<\/p>\n<ul class=\"longlis\">\n<li>Avalanche defenseman <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/m\/makarca01.html?utm_medium=linker&amp;utm_source=www.prohockeyrumors.com&amp;utm_campaign=2026-08-08_hr\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Cale Makar<\/a><\/strong> is extension-eligible now that he\u2019s in the final year of his contract. <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.denvergazette.com\/2026\/08\/06\/chaotic-summer-of-expensive-contracts-cba-changes-could-impact-cale-makar-extension-nhl-insider\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Evan Rawal of The Denver Gazette wonders<\/a> if this could be a situation where he and Hughes are waiting each other out to see who signs first and then benchmark from there.\u00a0 Makar, a Norris finalist for the last six years, is coming off his fifth straight year of averaging over a point per game, leading some to wonder if his next AAV could push toward the $20MM mark thanks to some of the other pricey deals handed out this summer.<\/li>\n<li>With some big money being handed out to promising young players this summer, Jeremy Rutherford and Shayna Goldman of The Athletic recently examined (<a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/athletic\/7483331\/2026\/08\/05\/jimmy-snuggerud-contract-projection-blues\/?smid=ta-ios-share&amp;source=emp_shared_article&amp;smid=ta-ios-share\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">subscription link<\/a>) what an early extension for Blues winger <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/s\/snuggji01.html?utm_medium=linker&amp;utm_source=www.prohockeyrumors.com&amp;utm_campaign=2026-08-08_hr\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Jimmy Snuggerud<\/a><\/strong> might cost.
