In parts of Northeast Philadelphia, residents say rats have become a constant neighborhood menace, with reports of chewed-through car wiring, rodents turning up in backyards, and growing concern about cleanliness and safety on residential blocks.<\/p>\n
What began as complaints in Mayfair spread to nearby neighborhoods, where residents are pressing city and state officials to do more, according to WPVI<\/a>.<\/p>\n What’s happening?<\/p>\n People in multiple Northeast Philadelphia neighborhoods say worsening rat infestations are serious enough to interfere with everyday life and cause property damage.\u00a0<\/p>\n Residents reported that the animals have been seen moving through yards and alleys and clustering near cars parked behind rowhomes.<\/p>\n Dawn Amoriello, who lives on Friendship Street, told WPVI she feels surrounded by the problem.\u00a0<\/p>\n “I don’t like to park out back because a lot of people’s cars have been damaged. You come outside at night and the rats are like this big,” she said, gesturing to indicate the rodents’ size.<\/p>\n Residents also reported that the infestation is costing them money.\u00a0<\/p>\n WPVI reported that a Tyson Avenue car owner spent about $1,800 on repairs after rats chewed through vehicle wiring.\u00a0<\/p>\n In Mayfair, resident Mary Martin said conditions on Unruh Avenue are “absolutely disgusting” and “an embarrassment,” particularly with children living nearby.<\/p>\n Officials told WPVI that mitigation work is being carried out on about 20 blocks.\u00a0<\/p>\n They also said the infestations appear to be connected in part to poorly handled trash, neglected properties, and abandoned vehicles.<\/p>\n Why does it matter?<\/p>\n Rodents can contaminate outdoor spaces, create unsanitary conditions around homes, and leave families uneasy about using their yards, alleys, or parking areas.<\/p>\n The financial toll can also add up quickly.\u00a0<\/p>\n Chewed vehicle wiring, property damage, and repeated cleanup costs can be a major burden, especially for households already dealing with rising everyday expenses.<\/p>\n Rats in particular can transmit diseases like leptospirosis, which proved fatal for a California man living in close proximity to the creatures.<\/p>\n Officials conceded that current city resources were insufficient at addressing the issue.<\/p>\n Pennsylvania State Rep. Jared Solomon acknowledged that Adrian Jordan from the city’s Vector Control unit is “one staffer at Vector Control” and that “there are only about four serving the entire city of Philadelphia.”<\/p>\n What’s being done?<\/p>\n WPVI said the response has included outreach to residents, distributing trash cans, and sealing foundation gaps that may allow rats to enter.\u00a0<\/p>\n Those efforts are being coordinated across about 20 blocks by Philadelphia City Councilman Mike Driscoll, Solomon, and Jordan of the city’s Vector Control unit.<\/p>\n Solomon said the city is seeing a “consistent theme” behind the infestations, including improper trash disposal and neglected properties. Local leaders have also stressed that residents who do not keep their properties clean could face fines.<\/p>\n Officials said there is no single overnight fix, and Driscoll emphasized that neighborhood cooperation will be essential.\u00a0<\/p>\n “It takes a village to get this problem under control,” Driscoll remarked.<\/p>\n Amoriello summed up the frustration many neighbors are feeling.<\/p>\n “They’re just everywhere, and you can’t get rid of them,” she lamented.<\/p>\n Driscoll added that the work ahead is “just going to be day by day, house by house.
